Hydraulic Jack Oil

Does anyone have experience using tractor hydraulic fluid in a hydraulic jack? I recently bought a used hydraulic press with a 25 ton bottle jack, and wanted to replace the oil. I know there is a specific oil sold for hydraulic jacks, but if I drain the jack first so as not to mix the two, I thought I"d refill it with hydraulic fluid. I have 5 gallon pails of hydraulic fluid; why buy a quart of labelled jack oil if I don"t need to? Appreciate your advice.

My Dake hydraulic press uses Mobil DTE 24 hydraulic oil. I bought a couple of quarts at Grainger's, the keep it on the shelf. I also used this in a Taiwan made bottle jack when I drained and refilled it.

I suspect tractor hydraulic fluid (not gear oil) would work OK however, and certainly won't hurt the seals.

I used to work on hydraulic jacks. Didn't seem to be too particular with oil, as long as not too thick in cold weather. What really wrecked them was hydraulic brake fluid. It swelled up the seals so tight they wouldn't move and with any moisture present, corroded up the metal inside.

I fixed a floor jack once that had had brake fluid added to it. What a sticky, gooey mess.
I also saw a guy once add "hydraulic" brake fluid to the pump on his plow truck. He had just finished putting in about a pint when I saw what he was doing. I informed him of his error and he drained the whole system out before he started it up, avoiding a much bigger problem.
The word "hyraulic" in hydraulic brake fluid can cause a lot of problems for the unknowing!!

That will be fine, you can mix them as well. If you put it in a squirt type plastic bottle (like alot of jack oil comes in) that you can squeeze / force feed the jack you can save some hastle and time. Tip the top of the jack downward slightly, then level as you add. This helps to keep air out as you add.

Not sure where you are located, but if you get goose bumps walking outside in you boxers, warm the jack oil and jack in warm place overnight.

Have used many different types of hydraulic oil in several different jacks over the years with no problems that I know of. Most of these jacks, bottle, floor, presses are not high tech needing some special oils. At least that is my .05
