I need 2 thrush ball bearings that my 3 local bearing dealers cannot provide. The sizes that I need is 2 1/2 inches on the inside, 4 7/8 inches on the outside and about 1 inch high. If anyone knows of a good source to check, please let me know. Thanks!

That's not a particularly strange bearing size. So I'd suspect either your bearing shops aren't very good, or you're being overly demanding. Ie, does it have to be a ball bearing as opposed to a roller type? Double stacked instead of single race? Etc.

Since the bearing companies are the ones that make the bearings used by manufacturers, inability to find a bearing from a bearing manufacturer is suspicious. At least that's been my experiences with bearings. Dealers might insist that a particular bearing isn't available, but I've always been able to go to someone like Timkin and get it, in my choice of flavors.

I may just be out of the loop, but what's a thrush bearing?

I would assume that he means THRUST, ie. a thin bearing with rollers extending radially away from the center to take end loading of a shaft.

Heck, I know what a thrust bearing is. Perhaps this fellow discovered a new type. I never knew thrushes needed bearings before. :-)

Hi krum,
Many bearing sizes listed in catalogs are not manufactured for stock. If you want to buy enough of one of those sizes they can be ordered, but that doesn't help someone who needs a few for replacements. If the bearings you need are not available from the manufacturer of your piece of equipment, or from a bearing supplier, you have a couple of options. There are shops that can, provided there is enough material, precision grind the ID, OD, and width of existing bearings to a new dimension. The cost for having this done is more affordable than you might think. If there is another bearing available that is close in size(don't overlook metric dimension bearings) this might work for you. A second alternative is to make an inner and/or outer sleeve to allow the use of a different size bearing with your existing shaft and bore. Good luck...Al English

Your is a most interesting and informative reply. Obviously, you have had need of the processes you describe. I believe that as more and more of this 3rd world junk is imported into this country, that adaptations such as yours will become more and more necessary.
