I got a 7 in Milwaukee grinder (model 6098) at an auction, and it has no guard on it. A new one is about $30, so I am planning on making one.

I would like to know the internal diameter of the original. In other words, how much clearance between the guard and a new 7 in type 27 or 28 grinding wheel. It would also be nice to know how far below the wheels it extends and the "angle" of coverage. By the latter I mean how many of the 360 degrees of the wheel does it cover.

Any other saftey concerns I should be thinking about?

Hi JRT,
Osha says that all unused portions of a cutter, grinding wheel, sanding belt, etc., must be covered.

Unless you just enjoy a challenge, Milwaukee has already engineered a strong, well made, properly designed, good fitting, easy to adjust, guard for your grinder. I have taken the path of "I'll just do this the hard way" so many times myself that I can guarantee you the $30 Milwaukee wants could be earned in far less time than it will take you to make your own guard. If you need something unusual you have no choice, but even then it would probably be easier/better to modify a factory guard. On the other hand I fully understand what you are probably thinking. Being a notorious hard head myself, it took years for me to realize what I just told you. So either way, good luck...Al English
