Rats under the Hood

Have rats under the hood of a PSD Ford they are destroying all of the insulation and starting on the wiring. Tried glue boards, poisons and moving the truck on a regular basis. Any ideas on how to keep them away.

Chipmunks or mice or something got under the hood of my GMC and ate quite a bit of insulation off the firewall behind the engine and stuffed it in the air cleaner. They can do a lot of damage in one night. Really makes me mad--don't know what to do about it either.

The worst rats that get in under the hood are the endemic rats, from D.C.

Thanks for all of the responses. Going to try moth balls in the engine compartment. There is a chevy gas truck parked right next to it and they don't bother it. How about those electronic things they sell, I could plug it in at night.

I'd agree with moth balls. Another advantage to that is that you are helping lower the number of reproductive-capable moths, which are a nuisance in their own right.

Every diesel I own has that problem - including all my GMs, Fords, Isuzus, and Volkswagens. Mice love the insulation. I can't speak for the rats since we don't have any.

A friend of mine owns a used-car lot and he had problems he claimed he fixed by using Irish Spring soap. So, I bought a bunch - and put it under the hoods, inside the cabs, etc. Later - found the bars half-eatin along with everything else.

The only thing I've found to work - is to park the trucks on hard ground with no vegetation - e.g. pavement or gravel. Seems rodents don't like to travel far in open places with no cover. It's work better than anything else for me.

As to using poison? Yeah great - I did it and would end up with lots of bloated, stinking dead mice inside the truck.

Here's a photo of my GM 6.2 diesel with the air-intake completely blocked from the mice-nests.

Rat man's trick is to mix ground up sardines with the ground up type rat bait. They can not get enought of the bait. Keep away from your pets.

Power Stroke Diesel. Now I got something else to worry about. Insurance cover this. Mine gets a drive once a month, whether it needs it or not.

Yeaaah, RIGHT!

They make NESTS of the dryer sheets.

One of the worst messed up cars I've ever seen... neighbor's grandpa went into the rest home in the fall, and grandson packed the car interior, and the trunk, and the under-hood with dryer sheets, and put it in the garage.

The next summer, the old man died, and they were getting ready to have an auction, and went to get the car out.

The vermin had shredded, pooped on, and messed with the dryer sheets, making a HORRIBLE mess.

So, I lost faith in THAT plan!

try the bounce sheets like moline bob said. also, dont put the poison bait in the vehicle or under the hood, it draws the critters right to the vehicle. i use wooden boxes with a latch on top, drill a hole in the side maybe 1-1/2 inch to 2 inch hole and put the bait inside. that will keep pets out of the poison. also rotate the type of poison about once a month. i usually use one bite, tomcat, d-con, and what ever else you find.

Don't know about the dryer sheet thing, I found shredded dryer sheets in mice nests under a shed we moved this summer. Yeah I know they were mice, there were babies in the nest.

I had the same problem. I now leave the hood up on all our vehicles so they don't have a nice warm sheltered place to do their dirty work in.

I was told that bounce fabric softner sheets for the dryer work great for that also, I have put them in and on some of my storage stuff that rodents would get into, havent had a problemn since then, and they smell way better than moth balls!

I tried dryer sheets (bounce)never did deter the mice, in fact used it to make a nest. And talk about stink I think the mothballs smell much better, although I doubt they would work either. Best solution is poison, dead mouse will stink up car, but not as bad as bounce dryer sheets. Another effective method would be to open hood and close garage door and lock cat in garage.

Do you drive the truck regularly? If not get some moth balls, moth crystals or moth flakes and spread around the truck and under it. We found this is a good thing to keep mice out the seed corn, or boxes, etc stored in a shed. There is something about wiring insulation the little critters think is just delicious.
