Dry Ice

Its butchering weekend for us and the weather is not as nice as I would like. Last year it was 0 degrees and we froze meat outside before packing it in the freezer.
This year I was wondering about using dry ice to freeze our meat after packaging to take some load off the freezers. Has anyone done this before with success? Will it take too much dry ice to make this cost effective and feasable? How long would it take to freeze meat this way? We are probably going to freeze about 1200lbs of meat.

DO NOT DO THIS IN SIDE!!! Co2 is heaver than air and will flow to the lowest place and stay.
Tho it is a good way to freeze meat.
Get the dry ice pellets, put a layer of pellets in the container,them meat then more pellets, repeat, repeat.This will freeze the meat rapidly. Ask the dry ice supplier about the amount needed. Again be careful with the dry ice it will sufficate people or pets very quickly by replacing the air in a room. Speaking from experience with dry ice and Co2.

Dry ice will do the job, specially with that amount of meat to freeze. If you have it available. The people that sell it should be able to tell you how much dry ice to meat ratio for a good freeze. The good thing about dry ice is that evaporates from a solid to a gas, so no mess. And if you keep the container air tight it will last awhile. I guess you know that you will have to handle the ice with cloves -109 degrees will give you a nice burn.

Guido, they use good packaging, sealed, I believe. The stuff you buy at Kroger or whereever oozes CO2 gas everywhere.

I gotta laugh. A guy I would go fishing with in Canada insisted we take the fish we had cleaned and frozen before leaving and had them packed in Dry Ice. That part was OK but in 10 hours they would not have thawed anyway.

The funny part was the fact he wanted the coolers duct taped since they were in the van. He didn't want the CO2 leaking out. I would guess the expansion rate to be about 2000:1 so the tape was useless. But I did it to keep him happy.
