Hope some of you who are more computer-savvy than me can help me out here! My mom's computer has picked up some kind of virus in the last few days. First noticed when it changed the background picture on the desktop to some evil-looking symbol with words like "DANGER-YOUR COMPUTER IS INFECTED" or something of that nature. All these little "official-looking" warning boxes keep popping up saying the computer is infected or someone is trying to access your PC and they all want you to click something to download some kinda virus scan. Also it keeps trying to go to several different anti-virus websites, changes the homepage to that, etc.

I've run AVG Anti-spy, AVG Anti-Virus(free edition), and Norton anti virus. These scans take hours(Norton took almost 24hrs) because the computer's running so slow and all these websites keep trying to pop up(even when disconnected from the internet, phone line unplugged). None of these scans has found any threats!

So...what do I do now? I gotta get that computer working again! Thanks!!!

After you get everything fixed, look into getting a firewall. You can get hardware and software firewalls. Mac OSX has a good firewall, and the security system requires confirmation before it will install software.

If you are going to continue to trust Microsoft, look into a hardware firewall.

MALWARE SWEEPER in reply to Ron in Nebr, 01-09-2008 07:07:03
I have had nothing but good luck with MalWare Sweeper & have managed to bring back a couple of machines (mostly anyway). They have a free version on download.com that is easy to use & it's a very aggressive program, it doesn't take any "guff" from worms & the like. I only know one person who said it deleted something it shouldn't have (but I wonder if it wasn't an infected file also). You can review each file's location before you "fix" it. I agree that you shouldn"t use more than 1 actual anti-virus program, (AVG is great) and it's my opinion that a person should NEVER use any McAfee product under ANY circumstances... lost an operating system to one of their "updates". I have heard similar horror stories from others... it's not just me. One other thing to consider is buying a Registry Cleaner. Sped my machine back up to new or almost new. Glad to hear it's running again, Hope this helps - ALAN

Glad to hear you got it up and running. As a suggestion don't forget to set a new restore point. Because if someone select a restore point previous to your fix. You will get the trojan right back. John

Chances are her system is something older than Windows Vista.

Something I've found is Microsoft, even though they offer security updates and the like on XP and even 98se operating systems, the crooks get through faster than they offer fixes.

And as time moves on, they just plain lag, if not drag their feet with keeping the older systems secure.

Many of these worms or trojans fly under the radar. And perhaps most every antivirus/ spyware program out there misses the "good" or "Baddest ones" anyway.

I found that there is a lot of bootleg software still floating around on used computers that has it's authorization check turned off, and hense all the security patches past a certian date don't get through at all.

If security is an issue, or things are just too screwy it's time for a new system that will support windows Vista.

The computer I'm on right now is 3ghz emachine p4 w/1gig ram and a large widescreen LCD and was only $599 at walmart They have a litte slower one for a couple hundred less that's just fine. The one at the other end of the room was $350 you can't build one for that. They have been trouble free.

On my last unit....

Even after reformatting and reinstalling XP sp2 and all the legitimate updates and protection software it was a couple days before the crooks got through and it started acting up.

My apologies up front, because I don't mean to hijack the thread. But this relates directly to a problem I am having. Got a couple older computers that were free. They are Pentium IIs with Win98SE and WinXP. They won't update. How do I make sure the authorization check is turned on?

Thanks,

Anthony

Re: O/T- Computer has a virus- HELP!!!*****UPDATE!!! in reply to Ron in Nebr, 01-09-2008 07:07:03
Well, I think I got it whipped! Typing on it right now and all seems to be going well!

Went into it in the "safe mode"(didn"t know how to do that until I read it here!).....then went through all the files(most of "em anyway) and deleted anything that the properties said had been created in the last 3 days. Took awhile and I wasn"t sure I got "em all, but it seems to have cleared her up!

I know, it probably won"t work like a new one, but it didn"t before- kids had too many games and junk installed, and were always downloading crap from various game-oriented sites(hmmmm, think that might be a clue where this came from???)

But it"s up and running at least as good as before(maybe better, I removed a bunch of those stinkin" games!).

Thanks to all!

PS- when mom gets home from vacation I"m gonna STRONGLY suggest she get rid of Norton and replace it with something else....oh, also...when someone below mentioned not to have two anti-virus programs on at the same time because they"ll "fight each other", does that mean they won"t work or does it mean the computer will run slower, or???

well, good to hear you got some of it fixed... however, worms are tricky sons of boogers.

you have a worm. I hope you don't get a worm with tons of p0rno in it. I've had that before, and it was a nasty experience. I wound up deleting everything I had on there and just using the internet half-arsedly until i could get a new computer. this was back in '04, now stuff is so much better.

Go to Link and download their free version. I had the same roblem, it is caused by a trojan. It cleared out things that Spybot, Ad-Aware and Webroot SpySweepermissed.

You may not have a virus.
you may have a trojan horse, or a worm.
Trojan Horses can behave like that, and many anti-virus programs are unable to detect them or do anything about them. same with worms

both can be a nightmare to remove.

If you can, try to search google using the symptoms, and you may be able to find out the name of what you have, and you may find some removal tools, or other online help as well.

Get a Mac
I lost count of how many times I have recommended an Apple computer to people and they end up buying a PC, having it for a year or two, then buying a new one cuz their old PC slowed way down due to virus's & spyware.

Had this one and don't want it again. Got it from MyspaceInstaller. Not sure how, but that was where it came from. Download all three from AVG and run them. Follow the directions and it will be gone. The main ones you are looking for is rootkit and malware. This is not a destructive virus, but an extremely irritating one. Also find out where the file is located and destroy the installer. Do this by control-alt-delete and look for files that should not be there. Follow them to their location and delete from there. Be careful not to delete the wrong thing. Good Luck, Aaron

When your computer boots up keep hitting the F8 key. It will go into the safe mode. Then do your scan, after scanning is complete, follow spywares instructions on removal of trojans and virus. Restart the computer and go to start-programs-accessory-system tools- restore and select the create a restore point. If you have solved your problems use the date that you completed the virus removal.
And I agree with the other posts-- get rid of Norton. Avast.com is a good free program.
Another thing you might want to try; change your ISP to firefox, less chance of getting trojans and viruses. Firefox well actual tell you not to go to a certain site. Good luck John.

Allan is right - dump Norton. Uninstall it from add/remove programs - or if it won't uninstall properly, Symantec has a "complete removal" tool that will totally take it off. The remove tool works great - which is more than I can say for their actual antivirus most of the time.

You never want more than one antivirus program running at one time - they can really cause a lot of trouble. AVG is fine, but it can be damaged by malware.

But your worse problem will be getting the malware off that is trying to scare you. There is a ton of that junk floating around and some of it is terribly noxious to get off. DON'T fall for any of the messages asking for $49.95 to cure your problem!

You can try booting in safe mode (hit F8 as your PC turns on) and sometimes delete the subdirectory(s) that the junk is hiding in, but sometimes finding it is half the battle.

While in safe mode, empty your recycle bin, delete all Internet explorer temporary files, and then go in to "msconfig" to remove entries in the startup list that shouldn't be there.

Or the other option would be back your files up to a USB key or whatever, and then reinstall Windows. Then be sure and service pack it all the way back to current and reinstall AVG...

Howard

If all that is happening even if you "cure it" it will never run the same again. I'd wipe it and start over fresh. Maybe you can back up your documents so they aren't lost before wiping it.

How old is the computer? and what operating system?

If it were mine i would do as Allen said and totaly wipe the hard drive and do a fresh install.
After a while these computers get so much junk on them that you can not get rid of it,therfore they just start slowing down and acting up and eventualy get to the point that they just crash.
If you do a clean install your computer will be like new again, some recomend it once a year,if alot of different people are using it.

Sounds like something mine was doing. Everything was fine until the kids were using it one day ? The crazy thing was self dialing and hooking up to the internet. I found a free spydoctor downloaded it through Google updater seemed to be the least slow download I could find for dialup. So far it seems to of helped it.

Hi Ron,

I make my living with computers.

First rule of thumb. Never, ever download anything that is "free" from the Internet. The effect is just like passing around a social disease. :>)

Second rule: Dump the silly Norton. It's nothing but a boon-doggle.

Okay, off my soapbox. :>)

If that unit were mine, I wouldn't even mess with it. Wipe that hard drive and start all over.

Allan

Thanks Allan, and everyone else too. Main problem is that it's not my computer...it's mom's, and she paid for the Norton...and she's gone on vacation for most of the month.

As for the "free AVG", I've only read good stuff about it up till now?

I'll try some of the other suggestions first, and keep going from there. Probably have to just start over with it from scratch.

Somebody want to buy a computer (cheap) cause it is full of a few major viruses. Caused by one of those freebies I here about. It was cheaper to buy a new computer on sale than clean old one. So no more freebies can't afford them.

I've got the free version of AVG on two computers. Never had a problem with any virus or trojans. Can't say that about the Norton that I got rid of. I suspect that the Norton actually allowed the un-wanted things to come in, just so it could brag about how quickly it removed them.
