Lite-Rite Tester

My boss ran across this tester today: Lite-Rite Floor & Equipment Tester 115 VAC Model A 10 Watts MFG. By W. E. Anderson, Inc. in KC MO.

has a red and a black lead that plugs in like the older style volt meter same ends on both end of leads. Meter reads from 5 Meg to 10 K.

The boss handed it to me and said figure out what this is. He hasn't a clue of anything that is for electricity. I have never seen anything like this. Can anyone help me out. I will post a picture in a few minutes.

Looks like a megohmmeter (Megger)used in the electrical industry to measure high resistance values. Usually generates a relatively high voltage like 500V or 1500V. From the other descriptions sounds similar

A Google search turned up the following information:

I haven't seen one of these units, but I've worked in electrostatic discharge (ESD) environments. The general idea is you don't want a dead short to ground, because of the risk of electrocution, but if the resistance to ground is too high you won't discharge static fast enough. I seem to recall that 100 kilohms is about ideal. Typically you have a static-safe mat on both your work surface and the floor, so both you and your work are protected from ESD.
