I want to go around and measure all my household electric devices. Last winter I used a space heater in my garage to finish a tractor restoration and it showed big time on my utility bill.

I'm looking to buy an AC watt measuring meter that can also plug into 220 volt appliances in addition to standard 120 outlets.

Not that I don't trust my electric company....

Any ideas out there ?

Check out the Energy Detective. I put one in and have another for the house. Easy to put in too. One model has a transmitter that is attached to the glass on the outside meter and then a wireless reciever for in the house. The model 1001 is what I have. To hook it up you take the cover off your main electrical panel and connect the senders to each hot line of your 220 incoming power. Then there is another small module that connects to the senders and a spare breaker and neutral. The reciever is plugged in to any outlet in the house. You load all of your rate information into this little gadget and then you know what you are using right now, how much it is costing and how much it is projected to cost for the billing period. Plus a whole lot more. It is really good because I am paying a little over 47 cents per KW. Every thing that uses power counts.
Here is the link. If this forum will let me post it.

Hi Oly

That is great information. Thank you...just what I was looking for.
I may order the 1001 tomorrow and possibly the PC data link kit.

I hope your 47 cent/kwh number is a mistake in the decimal point. We pay the highest in the country here in CT, or so I thought at $0.19/kwh

I think you will really like the monitor. No mistake on the cost per KWH. We get power from diesel generators owned by private company. They get to make 14% above cost. No incentive to save money on anything they do. I am 400 miles west of Anchorage, Alaska. No roads in or out here, air travel only. Some of the smaller villages around here are paying over 65 cents per KWH. Just the price we pay for living on the last frontier.

Google Kill a Watt. Pretty neat little tool. Don't know if they have a 240 volt model.
You may be amazed at what you find..Plug it into your TV while it is off!
Good Luck,
Andy

Thanks. I just checked 'em out but I didn't see that they carried a 240v version. I suspect they don't want consumers moving and poking around behind big appliances. But I'll give them a call tomorrow.

I just read that in the average home, 40% of the energy used by all electronics is when the device is "off".

I use an old watthour meter. I picked up a box of them once at an auction. It shows accumulated watthour like the utility meter and if I want raw watts, I just have to time the disk and look for the Kh value on the meter, usually something like Kh = 7 watthours per revolution. Multiplying that time per revolution (in hours) times 7 (Kh) gives me watts.

The Amprobe doesn't give watts, doesn't give power of motors, just for heating elements and doesn't accumulate watthours for things that don't run continuously.

Amprobes can be had at reasonable cost new or used.

You might have to make up a short extension cord like device that will allow you to place the clamp around just one of the wires powering the device.

Hey JJ
You can by an adapter the plugs in the ac line and then you plug the appliance in the adapter. It has loops that you can clamp the amp probe to with different current multipliers.
