Need a hay hook....

I'm looking for a hay hook for handling small bales, but I want one that has a thicker wooden handle than the "made in China" types I've come across. My uncle had hay hooks years ago that had a thick wooden handle or cross piece, which had an oval cross section and was very easy on the hands. I really don't want one of the small round handled types. Any one have a source such a hook? Does any company still make them with thicker wooden handles?

Thanks

Jerry A.: As a teenager I was on hauling crews that handled more than 11,000 bales each summer, completely unmechanized. We picked them up from the ground and stacked to the roof of tall old unventilated Missouri barns. My favorite hook was a steel handled one with a long shank to the hook, probably homemade. You could drive it into a bale with the lightest flick of the wrist. My least favorite were some with a curve in the shank to the hook. I think that's the kind I often see for sale now. Sometimes no good, in my opinion. I never liked a wood handle, but I could use one if the rest of it was correctly made. And some of this may be psychological; if you liked an old wood hook, that's the kind for you! I was the hiring "boss" of a crew when I was 18 years old. My best crew members were wiry smaller guys. I weighed only 130 pounds and I was the stacker. Big guys might beat us for a few hours, but us smaller guys seemed to handle the heat better and could stay in the field until the last bale was hauled, sometimes past midnight using car lights aimed into the hay mow. Normal haying weather was temperature near 90 with high Missouri humidity. Would hate to have to do it now. Mike-Iowa

The TSC near here sells wooden handled hooks, but don't know if these are 'thicker' as you ask for.... You could always carve your own handle for them?
