Older vs Newer Chainsaw Question

I have been looking at lighter chainsaws and found a left over Stihl MS200 with the rear handle (vs the top handle version).

It is Phase I emissions and the newer saws are Phase II. Can anyone tell me what the difference is between the two standards as it relates to the saw? For example, any carb or muffler differences?

Thanks!
Bill

You might be able to find information on the differences between phase 1 and phase 2 at the EPA site.

I am not aware of any significant changes to the ms200 because of the epa compliance. Different carbs have been used and I believe that the ignition coils from old to new are slightly different in their internal timing advance, but as a general rule the older saws are better. The muffler on the newer version is probably also slightly more restrictive.

BTW, the rear handled version of the ms200 hasn`t been available here in the US for that long and neither has the designation been ms200, it was formerly 020.

Since you are not in California over there on the left coast, I wouldn't worry about what standard the emission system is. Sorry, I cannot tell you what the differences, if any, might be.
