This week it took all week to get the plugs changed in th 5.4 motor in my 04 F150. We found there is a TSB on changing plugs, can you believe it. TSB 06-5-12

The problem is there is a portion of the plug that can break off and stay in the engine.

There is a special tool for removing the part left behind. You can not get them until after Jan 20.

The tool has a 9mmx 1.00 tap and a bolt tha goes through a puller. We used a 9mm x 1.25, more common, tap and a piece of 3/8 all thread. Ground down the end of the all thread and put 9mm x 1.25 threads on it. A couple of washers and a not for pulling and we have a tool that works.

The TSB stays to remove the porcelean from the extension before using the tool. It would not come out. We taped it down and ground off the end of the tap and were able to get 3 to 4 threads for the puller to turn into.

Does that apply to the Autolite HT plug with the long unthreaded portion that extends down through the head beyond the thread? I just changed one on my '05, FX4 with a 5.4 and it came out with some resistance but not excessive resistance. It turned out to be a leaky injector problem that was fouling the plug on that one cylinder. There is a Ford service bulletin for the '05, 5.5 which covers problem for 10 years and 120,000 miles so they changed the injector free of charge.

Yes it is for 05 models as well. If it came out okay thats fine but it probably squeaked as you turned it. 7 of 8 of mine came out but number eight was the problem. The injectors are covered but the plug change is not. The plugs come out easier if the engine is warm. Cool enough to touch but not cold. That is how we started but by the time we got to the last plug it must have coooled down some.
