I have in floor heat in my shop that runs off a 40gal natural gas water heater. My question is how can I monitor how much that shop is costing me? The line is 3/4in for the supply.I think it runs for 1 to 1.5 hrs per day to keep it at 60 degrees.Thanx Dan

Many years ago I bought three obsolete gas meters from my local gas company. I think I paid $10 each.

Don't know if I could do that now. The gas company was changing over from the old boxy sheet metal type to the newer die cast meters.

Before selling the meters to me, they removed their soldered on ID tags.

You could try googling on 'gas meters'. Lots of mfgs put meters on their process equipment to monitor usage and control their costs. I would also check eBay. I know eBay has alot of electrical meters. I have bought several there.

Hello Dan Gas input to water heater: 40 gallon average of 45,000 btu. Natural gas has 1020 btu per cubic foot(average) 45,000 divided by 1020 =44.11 cubic feet per hour X 1.5 hours = 66.16 cubic feet. 66.16 cubic feet X $.02 per cubic feet= $1.32 cost per day. Hope this is close. DH
