I have an old ('70's?) model 553 Skilsaw, that has a bad switch. I have not have any luck finding a replacement. Local Skil tool repair shop says they haven't had one for years. Any ideas ?

Thanks

Greg

My dad (professional carpenter) gave me a Porter Cable worm-drive saw back in the 70's- it was probably from the early 50's. He was upgrading to a new Skil worm-drive. When I next worked with him 6 mos. later, he had another Porter Cable, just like the one he had given me. Said the Skill hadn't lasted 3 months, so went back to an "Old Reliable". 20 years later, the switch on mine went south- I stopped by the Porter Cable distributer in Tacoma, and he had one on the shelf. I pointed out that the saw was probably 50 years old, and they still had parts? He replied that it seemed like all but about 3 of the ones originally sold were still in operation, and they were being handed down from father to son (they got a good laugh out of my story). He said their later models weren't as good, because they had apparently finally figured out that you couldn't sell a man a new saw if the old one never wore out. I'm still using mine, and will probably give it to my son someday.

I did look at that website. The saw is not listed, but the switch looks like the one for the HD77 type 17. I might just try one of those and see if it is the same size or will fit in the handle.

Take your old switch to the store and compare it to the new one. I bought one for the 77 Skilsaw at Home Depot and it fit my old Craftsman, except for the terminals. A week later the Craftsman threw a commutator segment, so I guess I have a new switch for my Skil 77 when it goes bad.
