I am considering one of those 40 dollar Harbor Freight chainsaw sharpeners as an alternative to filing. Has anyone used one of these do they work good, great, ok or should I leave it in the store?

I think its on sale right now for $29.99. Like others have said, probably not bad for the money, I have had mine for about 2 years, be sure to dip the chain in solvent to remove oil, as the wheel gums up quick if you don't. Does a pretty good job for the money.

A stupid thing to watch for is to MATCH the chain angles. Most chain is 20% degrees and make sure you set that for left and right cut. The chain will walk to the side the chain is cutting better on. The clamp on that machine is kind of cheep but it will work if you take care.

Have used mine for a couple of years now, works great, but like the others have said get some better wheels else ware. the one that came with it didn't last very long. Not shure but i think im using the oregon wheel also.

Bill,
As long s you are only sharpening a few chains a month (15-20), it should do you good. Don't buy their cheap sh$t wheels, buy an Oregon wheel, they will last you a life time. Bought their grinding wheels before, not worth taking home. Jst make sure you know what angles to use, some of the newer Oregon chains are using differant angles to make it cut right. Just make sure you can adjust it. Don't buy a fixed grinder. you will regret that. You also sharpen chisel chains differant than chipper chain. That is why angles are important on a chain grinder. It should be able to adjust 2 differant angles, 3 would be ideal!

Supergrumpy, Part number
1/8" thick 4 1/8" diameter 7/8" hole OR4125-18
3/16"thick 4 1/8" daimeter 7/8" hole OR4125-316
1/4" thick 4 1/8" diameter 7/8" hole OR4125-14
1/8" thick 5 3/4" diameter 7/8" hole OR533-18
3/16"thick 5 3/4" diameter 7/8" hole OR534-316
1/4" thick 5 3/4" diameter 7/8" hole OR534-14
5/16"thick 5 3/4" diameter 7/8" hole OR534-516
don't know the hole size on your grinder, but these are the Oregon wheels, you can make a bushing if your is smaller than these.

Not here, I am at home now, I will try to remember to check in the morning and let you know. I might need to know what diameter wheel yo need, the thickness, and the hole size, but I will see what I can find.

Yes I know what you mean about filing its hard to hold a consistent angle therefore its not as sharp.

I may just have to take advantage of the sale price on that. I seen the web sale price was 40 bucks.

Does this sharpener also do anything to take the rakers down? I just file them off a couple strokes every few sharpenings. Sometimes I get it right sometimes it gets a little too aggressive. How do you guys normally take them down?

With all the good responses you're received I would buy it. They had a pro type chain sharpener
where I worked and I used it for shapening my chains. Always seem to stay sharper than when I filed them. You miss all those fringe benefits when you retire. Hal

I've had one for couple years now and use it a lot: sharpen 6-8 chains every couple weeks. Have had absolutely no problems with it. Took a couple times messing up to figure out you have to pay attention and adjust settings for each chain, exclusively: like anything else mechanical. Will never go back to fileing unless in the woods and need a touchup right now.

I looked on-line and saw $39.99. I'd like to pay the $10 less.
