Sorry if this is the wrong place to post this question, I am starting from scratch and know NOTHING about tractors except driving them. I have my Grandpa's 600 Series (?) Ford tractor and I am going through the manual trying to understand basic maintenance. When I got to the section on "air cleaner" and I went out and tried to take apart the air cleaner, the cup came off of the bottom but it didn't seem like the air intake screen was something that would come out in one piece? Does this mean that it is that bad and I just need to scrape and pick it out and get a new one? And if so where would I do that? Thank you so much for your time.

As everyone else said, you don't try to clean the screen. The way an oil bath works is that when the incoming air goes through the oil, any dirt picks up oil. The oily dirt then gets trapped by the screen and falls back into the oil cup. So it's the cup you clean, not the screen. Dump out the oil, rinse with a little bit of solvent, then dig out the dirt with a screwdriver. Once you have most of the dirt out of the cup, rinse it again with solvent and let it dry before refilling and reinstalling.

A very important thing: IF THIS IS A DIESEL, and you clean the cup with gasoline, make sure there is no trace of gas left in the cup before you refill. Gasoline in the oil bath can cause a diesel to run away.

If you mean an oil bath air cleaner with the cup below the canister with the screen in it -- those screens are not removable--I am not familiar with Ford tractors. The whole thing is supposed to be soaked in solvent periodically, at least the International ones are. Not many people do that. The IH screens are riveted to the canister. You can remove the unit from the tractor, plug the lower opening and slosh parts cleaner, kerosene, etc in it and get it more or less clean. Then pour oil through it.

Thanks, I'll try that for now. Do you think it something I can/should replace?

The screen is for the most part some thing that isn't replaced. You can clean it but its made to last a life time. If the oil bath is serviced as it should be it will last your life time your sons and his sons. To replace it your talking about $100 plus if you can even find one

That is a wire mesh, it lasts a long time, particularly since it has oil in it. Should be ok unless it is rusty or plugged beyond cleaning. Some people do remove the rivets, clean and reinstall. In most cases that is not necessary.
