Something with a Comet or Cat three piston ceramic pump. And without a Chinese clone engine. Nobody ever bought too much pressure and volume when it comes to cleaning. With the good pump you can hook the pressure washer directly to your house or shop hot water tap. Once you use warm or hot water you will never willingly use cold water.

I have one with a 5.5hp Honda. 2200psi, 3.5gpm. This is just about right for my use, which includes the things you mention. Will cut all but the worst burned on grease. The volume of water is as important as the pressure. Got mine for about $350 from Sam's Club a few years ago. Prices are much higher today.

I got a 1250 psi cold water unit that will knock the mud off tractors but doesn't do a very good job on cars. Be careful, you can take paint off pretty easy. To wash cars you really need hot soapy water. IMHO its hard to beat a decent commercial car wash. Besides, how many $5 car washes would it take to pay for a several hundred dollar pressure washer and all the soap? But, like I said, you can't beat them for tractors and farm equipment.

I bought a Karcher, mainly for washing the truck. Pump housing broke on the first one. Karcher sent me another unit; it wouldn't work at all. They had problems with their GFI and sent me 5 units before I got one that worked. I've used it about 6 years now and it's hanging in there, but I wouldn't take any bets on how long it will last.

Brother got a cheap Harbor Freight electric that died in a short time. He took it back and they made him a swap deal for an engine unit with 2,400 psi that he really likes.

Those el-cheapo $100 ones will do as good or better than a car wash.

But if you want a REALLY good one buy a Hotsy ! Unlimited supply of hot water under pressure can't be beat. Pricey ,but should last a lifetime.

A $100 pressure washer is not even close to a car wash. Most car washes are arond 1200 to 1500 PSI. Anymore could take paint off too easily if one wasn't careful. The biggest advantage a car wash has is the high pressure soap and hot water. Most pressure washers, even high pressure ones, use low pressure soap. It makes a huge difference. Higher pressure and/or heat makes up for it. Some good pumps like Cat can be set up for high pressure soap. A unit like a Hotsy works well because of really hot water. However if you look at the PSI on a Hotsy, you will see that it is lower than what you would think. The hot water (steam) is what makes the difference. A Hotsy type unit is expensive. Another thing to look at when considering a pressure washer, other than pressure, is the gallons per minute the pump puts out. Some cheap washers sound good because of the pressure but don't have enough GPM to take advantage of the pressure. It was explained to me that the pressure cleans the dirt off, but the GPM washes it away. Kind of like sandblasting. If you have more CFM, you can use a bigger nozzle and do the job a lot faster with the same pressure. Dave

Personally I'd steer claer of the campbell hausfeld models. I've had one for about 5 years and it's on it's third pump! The engine is a 6hp briggs which is fine. They are vertical shaft pumps and I've had nothing but trouble. The first pump failed after about 6 hours of use. The side of the pump housing cracked while I was in the middle of washing my truck! Just my 2 cents.

I've had a northern hydraulics one with kawasaki engine for about 15 years and its been a good one the motor especially. It sits in a damp old cellar to keep from freezing and it always starts on the first pull. Lee

You're talking $6-700 for a good one. Electric pressure washers suck, IMHO. Mine was purchased at home depot for $649, and is under the dewalt brand. I'm sure excell made this washer. This is a 6.5 hp, 2800 psi washer that will work well for any application.

I've never found much use for a pressure washer after I bought one!

Troybilt or Briggs portable power products make a decent one. I have a cheap briggs I use at shop to wash lawnmowers, it gets a lot of use in the summer. They take some care to last a while. don't buy Karcher, or Powermate, they are the bottom of the cheap ones!
