5.5 briggs too rich?

Neighbor dropped off a craftsman rototiller with a 5.5 briggs. Maybe 10 years old, still looks good. It runs but makes a lot of black sootty smoke. Seems to have good spark, just seems like it is running way rich. I only see one adj. screw low on one side. I turned it all the way in and all the way out, with no change. Never really worked on these much, just trying to help a friend. Any help or advice, other than telling me to take it to a repair shop, would be appreciated, thanks.

OK, I should have mentioned that I have the air cleaner off. The choke is working fine. Gas tank was empty and I put in a quart of fresh 90+ with quickleen in it.

Ok, thanks for all the input but it was a little more involved. For archive purposes this was a diaphram type carb, no adjustment screw, just a jet screwded all the way in the side. After tearing it down, cleaning it real good and replacing all gaskets it ran like a top. More reason to run sta-bil all the time in small engines. Thanks.

Try the vent in the gasoline cap...running can heat up gasoline and pressure up tank..

MAY GOD BLESS THE USA

if you know the gas is fresh and with no air cleaner, float level might be too high or a stuck float, if carb passages were plugged you would need lots of choke to keep it running

try easy stuff first before you pull the carb apart, new spark plug, redrain the gas and try a different batch with plenty of SeaFoam or Chemtool B-12 in

no mice stuck in there maybe????

If gas tank was empty, you might have a hole in the float, letting in too much gas, this will casue an engine to run rich.

mine has a flat metal choke lever on the carb, and it's hard to see when standing over the machine. Painted black doesn't help either. maybe you have the choke engaged?

Some of those have automatic type chokes like car. That will sure make black smoke if sticking or out of adjustment. If you have any 2 cycle mix maybe somebody switched gas cans?

You might check the valve cover breather, I have run into that before. Have you checked the air filter as well? Thats the first things that come to mind for me right now.
