Below, Davis in SC started a thread about selling shop machines. "Buzzards" wanted to steal his stuff. That puts me in mind of nursing homes. People who get too old to carry on become desperate. In my dad's neck of the woods there's a care place that demands $60,000 (for one person) or more entry fee, plus the thousands of dollars monthly fee. If that person dies shortly after, the facility keeps the downpayment. To me that's another example of buzzards taking advantage. I know a family that owns multiple care places. That family also owns an island getaway place in the Caribbean, a mansion they live in and another getaway place in Colorado. Not to mention their own private jet. All on old peoples' hard earned money they scavenged from them.

My mother went in a nursing home dementia unit 11 days ago. The annual charge is approximately $50,000 per year, charged on a daily basis. Nothing up front, and we can move her out at anytime we decide she would be better off someplace else.

Most homes in our area were in the same price range.

My grandmother died about 10 years ago. $60,000 per year was about the going rate for a decent nursing home in Florida. There might be some moneyto be made in thatbusiness, but it isn't necessarily easy money. This was a nice facility, with all the rooms around a central courtyard. I was surprised to see a bird feeder outside grandma's window. She could sit and look out the window at the birds, something she loved to do. The place was well kept and clean. My dad was the executor, and he is tight. But I never heard him gripe about the money.

For that kind of money you could hire a live in nurse or a nurse that was there most of the time. $60k is a lot of money. Think of it this way Billions of dollars are spent in the health care and nursing home industry....somebody is getting rich.

Since a person in a nursing home needs care 24 hrs a day $60,000 a year figures to be less than
$7/hr not many nurses work for $7/hr

Northern California nursing home nurses make $32-$38/hr. Certified Nursing Assistants pay unknown, but complain of no raise in 5 years. Private pay for 2 bed room is $209/day. Single is $309/day. Price does not include incontinence supplies, exam gloves, medication, etc. State (Medical) pays about $4500/month. When you die State puts a claim on your home for repayment.

For home care, Certified Nursing Assistants charge $17/h, 3 hr minimum. Nurse is required for injections. If you have a live-in CNA, Social Security and workman's compensation is paid in addition to salary.

In our communities, the two enterprises that have the most trouble making ends meet are the ones that take care of the very old and the very young, meaning nursing homes and child care centers. They have to spend tons of money to meet state and federal laws but the clientelle they serve are usually at the lower end of the income bracket and aren't able to pay the full bill. Why do you think the wages are so low in these facilities?

Yes, we had a county home in this county for many years. It became too big a drain on the county's resources so they closed it. But some of the occupants were indigent. So obviously there's a big disparity of situations. The extended family I know must know where to build their facilities, and they started in the business long ago. They have more than one generation living off that, none of them have other jobs and managers and caretakers do "the dirty work". About half the time they're vacationing. It's a sorry situation when capitalism turns to outright greed.

I had to put my mom in a nursing home, they did not have enough coffee cups to serve them coffee after dinner, they waited until some had finished drinking coffee, then washed the cups and served the remainder.
The facility was owned by three sisters.
Upon leaving the home, I noticed three Cadillacs parked in front...the owner's cars.
We moved mom.

I guess if you think nursing homes are making a big profit you need to buy or build one and get in on the action
