I'm in the process of building my mechanic tool set. I'll be starting work in a few months.

Since I'd prefer to buy rite the first time, even though it's more $ up front (but hopefully only buy once) what are the main brands I should be checking out?

I know Snapon and Knaack, any others and do they all have the 'unique' arrangements with their dealers that Snapon has?

Thanks
po habib

if i was starting out now id buy the big box at home depot,500.00 for the bottom and 400.00 for the top.use that box a few years and then get a snap on.my snap on is 15 years old and still looks and works good. i see new guys buy big expensive boxes and dont have enough tools to fill up 3 drawers in it.when you can move up to a snap on id buy a used one that has been traded in buy one of those guys that has to have the latest and greatest box.by the way i was #3 in total hours ran (in a shop with 90+ techs)with my old snap on .its full of the tools i need to do the job fast.

I also make a living as a mechanic. I've seen alot of guys get in over their head. I started out with a small craftman box that i bought new. I then traded up with used boxes from snap-on and mac. This also has been over a few years. You need a box and tools, yes. You DON"T need the biggest, prettiest and most flashy in the shop. Let the other guy make that payment. It's going to get scratched and/or dented the first day anyway. Good Luck.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions. That's exactly what I'm trying to do though, buy used, but good quality instead of junk.

I'm trying to find these "used boxes from guys over their heads" so I can buy one.

Any suggestions on where to look besides the paper?

Thanks

Estate sales are a great place. Also, go to all your local auto repair shops and look on the bulletin board which is usually in the lunch room. Guys who need to sell often advertise where they work.

I am a former a&p mechanic{airframe & powerplant). I worked at an airline in Indianapolis ,98% of tools and boxes were Craftsman. Best advice is don't go crazy with a big box, save your money start out small. You will find out what you need after you start working. Best of luck BillJ

Get with your Snap-On, Mac, or Matco route man, and when one of them gets a set that someone has either traded in on a bigger set of boxes, or that they have taken back because someone got in over his head, have them give you a call. Also, see if they are interested in trading for something that you might have that they are interested in. I traded a 2yr. old Sundowner horse trailer for my Snap-On KRL1201 top box and my old set(s) of Snap-On rollarounds for a KRL1001 Bottom.

Besides the newspaper, is there anyplace online where I can find used tools? I've searched around, but really can't find too many.

thanks

Before you go out and spend many thousands of dollars on pricey tools with a fancy name, check the newspaper for ads. Many guys buy tools they can't afford and then have to unload them cheap to get out of the payments. I recently saw an ad that said "Complete mechanic's tool set, paid $12,000, must sell. Will take $3,000 OBO."

Kennedy toolboxes are the best for the price but don’t put a lot of what in those large drawers (30lb) they will brake

Waterloo also makea a good toolbox for a reasonable price. Bill Jones had some good advice too-start out small and figure out what works for you. Good luck to you.
