Sirs, I use a lot of oil on implements, tractors surfaces etc. and would use a lot more if I could find a cheaper source.I would like to buy,say by the gallon, good lubricant somewhere between 5w motor oil and 3/1 sewing machine oil that I could be more free with on sickles, machine parts out of doors etc. Does anyone have any sources?

Well I'm a crop duster. That being said I am already killing the world according to most folks. Now I'll be brief on one little story. The EPA came to inspect out facility. I've got to ad this. Their office is about 200 miles south of us. They drove 25 mile north, got a flight flew 250 miles north, rented a car and drove 125 mile south to do the inspection and then reversed it getting home. It took 2 years to get the results of the inspection back. How in the world could it take that long? Probably didn't know what they were doing. Well they found all kinds of chemicals in the soil, but none that we had used. They found or at leas the said they found DDT. DDT was off the market several years before the crop dusting service started using the place. Well the boss was still responsible and because of the big expense of digging and hauling the dirt to a place to get it cleaned, the boss filed bankruptcy and quit. The land for the landing strip was leased from the city. EPA the said city had to do the clean up. Little city of 2000 couldn't afford it either and got out of it some way. That was 15 years ago and it has never been cleaned up. Another business now operates there and no one has died or got sick. Green grass still grows there as it always did. Remember, I said what was found was nothing we ever used? What we did use, well there wasn't a trace of it found. We have to keep records and so do the chemical suppliers that sell to us. EPA checked our record and records of chemical suppliers from all around to prove that we had used some of those chemicals. When they couldn't find that we had bought any they said it didn't make any difference we had to clean it up anyway. Makes you wonder why we have to keep records. They told us that the runoff would go into creeks, then river the into the Gulf and would get into ground water and cause animals and people to die, get sick and it had to be cleaned up for human safety. Now if they really thought it was that bad, why didn't they clean it up. There are 2 possible reasons, 1 they knew it wasn't bad or even there, or 2 they don't care one bit about all the people they said it was going to harm.
I could tell you of dozens of similar stories. OH yes I do know there are instances where people do things they shouldn't. I fly over an see it from time to time. EPA apparently don't care. If I see it they do also or could. Sorry I wasn't brief and also was off topic. At least I didn't start it.

Thanks for the suggestions. I didn"t intend to start something so environmentally contraversial. I"ve decided to use something that"s more ecologically responsible and politically correct. Native American elbow grease. We do use a drilled well but, heck, you probably get more heavy metal in your blood off those cheap Chinese tools.

some of these greenie tree huggers that lurk this board would have you to believe that everything that falls on the Earth is a major poison and contaminant. I disagree. Used motor oil is an excellent source of cheap and reliable lubrciant for things such as you mention. The likelihood of a gallon of oil..... no 25 gallons of oil pooled in a hole, reaching your water well is slim to none. Most drilled wells are 100 feet or more deep, have a steel casing down to the bedrock and about the only way anything on the surface is going to reach the water is if you open the well head and directly pour it in. I get so sick of seeing all these ridiculous warnings about spilling anything on the ground. The major rivers of this country...the Ohio and the Mississippi, not counting the hundreds of others...both great and small...carry millions of tons of water everyday containing all sorts of heavy metals, sewage and so forth. So far....I haven't seen the vegetation along the river banks cease to grow or glow an eerie color by night. If heavy metal pollution was as bad as these Chicken Little's (the sky is falling, the sky is falling) would have you believe.....the earth for 3 miles on either side of a river would be unfit for inhabitation by man or beast.

What little used motor oil you spill from oiling your machinery won't amount to a hill of beans.

You need to do more research, Mark. If you learn the facts and look at them objectively, you might change your position.

Duh:Does "Love Canal"ring a Bell? With your non-responsible reasoning I am glad you and I do not share the same Geographical space and glad there are a majority of Humans on this Planet who practice Clean Environmental Ethics. Me thinks you have a motive for your position and it probably does not include concerns for the Health of Beast,Fowl,Fish or Human ,only your Pocket Book. I'm Glad we have Laws to protect the rest of us from irresponsibles such as you,if you truly believe the evil Ecological nonsense you promote.

Do a little research on the Dead Zone south of New Orleans. It is believed to be the size of New Jersey.

You forgot to ask the chicken little's where they think that the oil and heavy metals came from in the first place. What all that oil and metal did to the drinking water. Funny how people have forgot how to think outside of other peoples opinions.

Used oil has a ton of metals in it. I wouldn't use it that way. Especially if you have water wells.

Greenpeace infiltrators: Reminds me of a Charlie Daniels song. I too don't have a garage, you can ask my wife. Just a big barn.

I'm not sure of the other posters, but I can assure you I'm not being judgemental of your use of motor oil. Any guess as to what is in most of my squirt oil cans? Of course, it makes me wonder how chainsaw bar oil would work for lubricating. Its supposed to be biodegradable right?

I worry about contamination. I'm on a 17 foot driven well.

My mention of the "dead zone" was something that I recently read about. It is apparently caused by fertilizer and can be prevented. But like everything else, it takes time and money. With crop prices being what they are, who wouldn't want to squeeze out every last inch of land to produce and use the most effective fertilizers possible to gain the highest yield? But at what future cost? Something farmers have to weigh.

What is wrong with change? It could save your life or the lives of your loved ones. Or would your rather save the buck fifty now?

Recycle used oil for surface lubrication. Put a piece of heavy sisal rope(Like a hayrope) in a bucket of used oil.Place another bucket next to it except locate it lower than the first. The oil will syphon through the rope into the second bucket and will be clean enough to use as lubricating oil, but don't use it in a engine.

You could get used oil and filter it, then use it for lubrication (not in an engine) I know a guy that takes used motor oil and pours it through an old sock into a 5 gallon bucket.
