I need to repair a couple of frame cracks on a 1951 Model B John Deere. Besides grinding the cracks out to get a good weld fill, should I do any pre-weld or post-weld heating of the frame, or just weld it cold and let it cool off? I will be using 7018 low hydrogen rod unless someone can tell me why I should use some other rod.

Bob, I believe the 7018 is a good choice. Clean your weld-line about an inch on each side. If you can't get to it with a grinder, it would certainly be a good idea to get it hot to burn off any oil that might be on the frame. I would clean it and weld it. Some people like to drill holes at each end of cracks to keep them from running. I think that is a good idea as well. Good luck. Steve Carmack
