Pressure washer only runs with choke on

I have a Briggs and Stratton powered pressure washer. It will only run with the choke on. No choke it dies out. Any suggestions on where to start? Thanks

It is a gummed up or corrosion stuck throttle shaft. That is a very common problem on throttle governed engine like the ones used on snowblowers, generators and pressure washers. Wiggle the throttle loose and squirt it with a penetrant oil spray to keep it loose. The governor will then keep the throttle at the right position to maintain constant speed without having to add choke enrichment.

If you want to get her going quick, try pouring a pretty strong shot of Sea Foam in the tank and run her for awhile. It MIGHT solve the immediate problem. Taking the carb apart is still the best long term fix. Jim

No need for a rebuild, take off the air filter and base, if it one of the cheap ones with a 5hp briggs vertical,take off carb bowl, clean it out, clean the bowl nut, that will be your high speed jet, put back on, should run, now you dd not state what briggs engine you have, so I am guessing, there a million of cheap pressure out there with 5hp vertical briggs engines. If you want to post an engine model, then I would know what to tell you to fixit. btw, don't use sta-bil branded fuel stabilizer, it is 50-50 if it will work and due to the way it works can leave a waxy substance in carb and make things worse. Use Sea-Foam or Briggs stabilier. I se Sea-Foam and have things sit for over 2 years with no problem.

Take a piece of fine, stiff wire and run it through all the carb passages. Soaking usually doesn't work by itself.

Spraying the outside of the carb does nothing but gets it clean looking. You might take off bowl, put some b-12 directly into the bowl or into the fuel inlet at the carb and then run it on a super concentrate of b-12. It'll burn the acetone. Keep acetone away from painted surfaces. Acetone is what women use to take off nail polish. Try...a fuel mix, into the bowl, take apart the carb, in that order.

One more. Take out the low speed needle by turning it in to stop and count the turns. Then run it out, spray the hole and then put the needle back to stop, run it out how ever many turns out it was. Also for the high speed needle if it has one. That way you don't have to reset the carb screws from scratch.

As you suspected, gummed up carb from sitting with un conditioned fuel. Make it a point to use Stabil in all your fuel for equipment which will sit. Having said that, do not use lacquer thinner. The best carb cleaners have acetone in them. Acetone will soften rubber and plastic. Buy some B-12 in spray and liquid. Before you pull off the carb, mix up some B-12 in the fuel, run the machine for an hour or so alternating with choke on and off and it just might clean out the varnishes. If it's badly varnished up, then you'll need to pull the carb off, take off the bowl, pull out the needle and float, and take all the gaskets out to be reused, spray out all the tiny holes, use some compressed air after you spray wtith the B-12 and reassemble. That should take care of it. if it doesn't, you missed some holes. Watch your eyes as the B-12 stings a mite. Always, always, stabilize your fuel in seldom used equipment. Make it a habit.

lacquer thinner is the best for cutting and disolving gummed gas I have found. Take carb off and apart, soak the whole thing a while in the thinner. Dry with air reassemble and you should be OK. I just did that on a Briggs on a air compressor. runs great now.

FYI, If you use lacquer thinner on some small engine carbs, you will ruin them. Tecumseh uses a very porous aluminum, then they seal it after manufactur to seal it, any harsh cleaners can destroy a good carb and cause it to suck air through the carb body. The factory recomends to use a spray carb cleaner, tag wire and a lot of compressed air.

It is not getting enough gas. Likely gummed up by dried gas from sitting awhile without starting.

Try carburator cleaner from a spray can. If that doesn't work, get a gasket kit for the carb and take the carb apart and clean it. Depending upon the fuel intake set up, other parts between the gas tank and carb may also be gummed up.

Getting the gaskets is the hard part. Taking it off and cleaning it is an hour job - less if you a comfortable with it.

I suspect your right. The problem did not exist before it sat for several months. I tried the carb cleaner route already. It did not help. So I guess it's rebuild time. Thanks for your input, my guess was along that line and now you've confirmed it. That projects going to have to wait until after a week of grandkids which sounds more fun than a carburetor anyway.
