Recently, I've been getting "This program has caused an illegal action and will be closed"
In details, it mentions "explorer"
Anyone know what's up?

Max,

Go to settings/control panel/add/remove programs/Microsoft Internet Explorer then pick repair Internet explorer. This will fix your browser.

De-activate your screen saver before you run this program. Delete your history and temporary internet files at least once a week, if you browse a lot.

Good Luck!

To add a postscript to Kevin and Toms posts. Open your start menu and go to system maintainence, you can setup defrag and scandisk to run automatically at your convenience. Mine runs at 3AM/4AM each Thursday. You should check for updates to your version/newer versions of IE and Outlook Express at the Microsoft download center it's free.

Kevin's advice is good. Scandisk and Defrag should be done every couple of months. Also open the case and make sure the fans are all working and the vents are not clogged; heat causes all kinds of problems with the electronics including random illegal instructions.

explorer was Bill Gates start at monoplolizing the Internet with his operating system (Windows Explorer and Internet Explorer same thing so don't buy Netscape...). He'll be back.

It probably means that your wife/girl friend/significant other decided that you spend too much time on the computer looking at pictures of naked tractors & semi-clothed antique iron, and she has decided to put the stuff she learned in the computer class (the one she took while you were at the Thresher's Reunion) to work.

All Replies have valid points, but the easiest is often overlooked. In assessories under system tools you will find scandisk and defragmenter. These are there to help your computer "find itself" when it gets lost. Scandisk finds errors on the hard drive and automatically makes them better. Defragmenter moves the files on your computer into a orderly pattern, so it can find things in a timely fashion. You must turn off your screensaver or it will interfere. I just defragged my dads computer and 9% of it was out of order. That is alot! Imagine trying to install a part on your tractor that was 9% too big! I hope this helps!

max, I experience the same thing. It says it will be shut down. It never does! It just sits there. Sometimes I can shut it down with ctrl/alt/delete, sometimes not. About 3/4ths the time, I have to hold the power button in for a few seconds. Once, I had to pull the plug. I threatened to throw it out the door and smash it with the backhoe, but my wife stopped me.

Most times it happens when I visit certain websites, like centry 21 and try to close before backing out. This may be a coincidence, but it seems if I back all the way out to the starting point, it doesn't happen. It never does this on this site or other discussion boards.

If anybody can explain, me and max is all ears or I should say eyes.

Max,

You need to take your computer to a professional and have them diagnose the problem. The error you are recieving "explorer" (not to be confused with Internet Explorer) is a reference to your Windows desktop. Don't ask me why they called it "explorer" but that is what they call the Win.com file that is the heart of your operating system. You may have a "Virus" or a bad hard drive. I just fixed a Company's notebook that had the exact same error and the hard drive had many bad spots. When I'm not drooling over farm equipment, my real job is working on computers.
Hope this helps.

Microsoft has never been good at memory management and your "offending" application has tried to use memory that your opperating system has either lost track of or has stored something without properly designating the space so other systems wouldn't try to use it.

It's a legendary weakness with Microsoft but since the gubermint won't open the door of free enterprize.... MS won't fix it anytime soon.

Just re-boot and pray for the day that competition gets a fair shot at building a better opperating system.

I know what you mean, and boy, is it ever annoying, to say the least, I guess the insinuation that I have commited some henious act against this almighty 'puter, is the point. Another one that is almost as bad is the "Java Script error", well, have never been to "Java", never read the "Script", let alone check it for "Errors"! The wording of these things is the main issue, we are guilty before the trial!

I guess you can tell I am not a 'puter expert, nor am I a mechanic, but when a wrench becomes too annoying to use, I stop using it, and maybe even buy one that is more "user friendly"! Have just scratched the surface of my grievances, but had better quit before this electronic gizmo zaps me for being "Naughty"!!!!!

There, feel a lot better now, anyone else care to have a go? Have a gooder, R.E.L.

The best way to deal with Java script errors is to disable Java. Java is a painfully slow language that is popular because it is not tied to any one operating system. Use your browsers options to disable Java scripting and Java applets. -BTD

I'm not computer expert, but in simple terms, the Java Script error means you are probably using Explorer 3.x. In order to keep there jobs, web builders constantly upgrade their web pages to the newest glitzy flashy software. In so doing, it takes more & more time to download each page, so this also keeps modem builders, phone comanies, and all such employed to constantly build more & faster phone line systems. Anyhow, so your older software doesn't know what to do with the new commands for the flashy, glitzy stuff.

Oh, and since the flashy glitzy stuff takes more & more computer memory, cookies, pointers, animation, etc. - well, your computer gets so overwhelmed with all this data, that it pukes all over itself and gets lost - makes an illegal error of itself. Newer Explorer software will take care of much of this, but of course you will need a new computer to handle the new software - so hardware & software people stay employed too.

Of course, 15 years ago we could have downloaded all the _content_ we want with a 14k baud modem onto a 1meg computer. All this flashy glitzy stuff doesn't help anyone. But, such is progress.

I'll note that rarely do the banner ads get done loading on this web site before I am done reading the message - perhaps one reason banner revenue is very low on this site. There seems to be a serious glitch with the banner ad server, and Kim might be well served to look for a better advertiser.
