Who sells large LP tanks to the general public? I'm tired of renting.

I get LP from FS Coop in eastern Ia. 500 gal tank rent is $50/year. I called them last fall about a used 1000 gal tank for corn dryer and a used one was $1100. They still have it. Chris

Anger from price gouging is motivation to rethink heating methods. Every time the cost rose I used less. Insulation. solar chimney, use your imagination. It's simple fast and cheap.

According to this site they build two different versions of 420lb tanks. The d.o.t has to get re-inspected and the ASME seems to be a good for lifetime deal? >Link

>Link The local dealer just jacked my yearly rental to almost $200.00 per year. Tick off #1 He won't deliver less than $300.00 per load. Which I don't care as I only purchase when the tank is less than 10%. What ticks me off #2. If he should deliver within 5 working days of my call for fuel. That's an extra $150.00 service charge as I'm not on the auto fill program. Located in Ontario Canada so we have rules just about as asinine as California or Massachusetts. Four local companies supply propane so there should be somebody that will fill a private tank. If nothing else a a couple of 420 lbs may go on the trailer via the tractor & loader. And get filled on the next trip to London or Kitchener.LP there is 55cents a US gallon cheaper there than here in Kincardine. Next spring McRoberts Fuel is going to find their 500 gallon tank on the side of the road with a sign telling them what to do with it.

Hi B&D,

Becareful or you may not get anyone to fill the cylinder. If the LP suppliers have there way then if you don't have a gas cylinder from the supplier, then the supplier doesn't have to fill it, that's any size of cylinder that there pushing for including 20# to 100#!

Here, if the cylinder is larger than 100# your out of luck finding anyone to fill it. It's a safety hazzard they say. A call to our utility commissinor fell on death ears.

Have you looked into building your own methane generator? A farmer in England runs his entire farm on a 10ft dia x 18" deep MG. He made the tank out of concrete with a loading shute and a pipe for methane supply. That's it. He ran his tractors and pick-up off his home made methane. He used a SCUBA pump to refill his truck cylinder. If I remember correct he only has to reload the MG once per year. The tank was ground surface high or just the concrete lid/top was sun exposed.

B&D,
If you find a used one, be sure to check out the valves and replace them if they are old. A neighbor gave me an old tank last year and I had it filled. 'Didn't use any of the gas last winter, as I didn't get my shop heater hooked up. One day in summer, I was working nearby, heard a hissing sound and thought one of my tractor tires blew out. Checked--nope. Then I saw the problem; the pressure-relief valve on the tank has popped open and was releasing LP into the air at a phenomenal rate. I quickly hooked up the garden hose and attempted to cool the tank, but to no avail. So, I called the propane dealer and they sent out a tech. By the time he arrived, he said that it would be fruitless to call a truck to pump it out and, in addition to the lost gas, incur a service charge. Soooo, he and I stood around and watched an entire tank of gas shoot up into the hot, clear summer sky. Fortunately, there are no houses, etc. nearby. A new pressure relief valve cost about $70, which, in hindsight, would have been a great investment before getting the freebee tank filled the first time! Around here (Utah), used tanks sell for about $1.00 per gal. capacity. Good luck and Merry Christmas!

Be careful if you buy from an idividual or auction. Here in Arkansas the tank has to be certified (have an Arkansas certification tag on it or be certified by an Arkansas certification agent)before any supplier will fill it. It has to have a readable tag indicating date of manufacture and the pressure specs. A bill of sale is also required if memory serves me. I bought one, a 500 galloner, in Missouri and the thing had a painted over tag that after finding out about the certifacation thing I became worried. As it turned out the tag cleaned up enough to allow for the specs to be readable. If the tag had not been there I would have been out $500. I would surely check with the people who fill them before I made a move. If you can buy one from a local supplier I would think that would be the safest route. I believe you're in B.C., right. Haven't a clue as to regs up there or any of the other states down here for that matter. Seems liability is a huge factor with these tanks these days.

Drive around looking for tanks where natural gas lines are being installed. Knock knock

I'm not sure where you're located, but around here a lot of farm auctions have tanks on the auction. Some on trailers for irrigation engines, some not. The one we have at our house, I bought on a farm auction for maybe $200.

About 15 years ago, I needed a 500 gallon tank for my shop, so I called our local Coop to see about renting one. The next day, some kid pulled one in on a trailer and parked it next to my shop. They've never billed me for rent on it, and now I'm not even sure they know it's theirs when they put propane in it.

Same here, gas dealer sells them. Just get ready for sticker shock. I was the same, tired of the rent asked about buying the old tank I was using.
Was the same price as a new tank, cost of steel...
They wanted 2 grand for the 500 gal. tank.
I'll just keep renting!

Scott
