My electric water heater (a o smith maybe, cant remember) makes a popping/ knocking sound every so often. Can hear it upstairs coming from basement. Still heats really good and I have drained some crud out of the bottom. Works fine just annoying, any ideas?

When mine was spitting through the pipes the bottom element was burning out, it even tripped the breaker in the panel. I have to replace the bottom element in my water heater every couple of years. What I do is remove both elements, I put the top one in vinegar for 24 hours, that cleans off the lime build up. The bottom one is junk. With the bottom one out I tape a 3/4" copper pipe to my shop vacuum and suck out the crud in the bottom of the tank through the element opening. In my case the crud is lime. I have made a little tool that I can push the lime to the back of the tank so I can get good access to it. Two weeks ago when I did it I sucked out seven quarts of lime. Maybe this will work for you

Hi Eric,

All the water heaters at an apartment complex I worked at several years ago had external pressure tanks mounted on them. I think they were on a tee with the pressure relief valve. They were sort of like two gallon versions of the pressure tanks in well water supply systems---they had internal bladders, a recharging valve stem, etc. Noisy water heaters were not a common problem but at least once I fixed one by changing that pressure tank (against my expectations, actually.) It kind of makes sense if you think of it in relation to the stubbed out and capped lengths of pipe that used to be teed off supply lines at every faucet to prevent water hammer.

Merry Christmas, Stan

While you have the heating elements out try to clean as much of the deposits out as you can. The best way is to disconnect the entire thing and tilt toward the bottom hole and try flushing through the top hole. I wish they made the household heaters with the clean out panel like the commercial ones have.

May want to check and/or replace that pop valve on it also. This way you won't get caught wondering why the water won't heat up and there is water running all over the place (don't ask how I found this out)

It's minerals from hard water that coat the electrodes. Only fix is to pull them out and clean them off. Most likely the bottom one is the worst.

If your water has a lot of mineral, it helps to change to the low density elements. They are the odd looking ones that extend almost to the other side of the tank then turn back on themselves,so they have the wattage spread over almost twice the surface area. The low density elements can have a lot of mineral build up without overheating and burning out.
