Just replaced points on the distributor and found the drive gear dry and slightly rusty. Is there supposed to be an oil bath in there? There's a 2-bolt plate low on the drive compartment/hydaulic pump housing, and a small screw up high, is this like a boat drive gearbox? What kind of lube?
Thanks much in advance.

i wont say for sure for your particuliar distributor, but, the letter series and the 240 i have with the i-h distributors have a small pipe plug that you remove with a flat blade screwdriver, once out you put grease in there from a grease gun. there is an air vent hole on the backside of the distributor that the grease will squirt out when full. owners manual says to put a zerk in there and pump it full. i use the tip of the grease gun and just hold it up against the hole and fill it. i figgure if the vent is plugged, i wont over fill the distributor.
