OT Battery

I have a 2004 Honda Civic, 100,000 KM, It has started first time every time but today the battery was dead. It started again with a boost, should I get more than 4 years out of this battery ?

I live in Nova Scotia and the winter is not easy on vehicles.

Hey Harvey
With proper maintenance a battery should outlast
at least the warranty period 60 to 72 months.
Climate should not be an issue. A fully charged battery has a 12.6 voltage reading at 70 degrees F. The colder the temperature the less potential it will have. Guido.

Here in the states we can have the battery load tested at an auto parts store, you probably have the same test available to you there. It is a basic test of whether the battery is good or bad. A Bad batteyry can be charged, but still be unable to deliver current. The test requires the battery be fully charged, then a load is placed on the battery. If the voltage drops too much it means the battery is bad. Usually because the acid has become too weak, or sediment has built up on or between the plates. If it tests good, then you need to look at the charging system, or a short to ground that is draining it after it is shut down.

I had to change the battery in my 90 model Subie last week. I looked at the reciept in the little bag and it had been in there since 01. Darn cheap Wally World batteries..

I use Walmart's best batteries. I have them in 2 vehicles and my garden tractor been in use 6 years. They're now around $70.00. You can check the state of charge in your old battery with a hydrometer as been suggested. A fully charged battery should be in the 1.250 range. Your battery is a good place to check the charging voltage. Should be in the 14.0 to 14.5 volts for a 12 volt system. Keep all connections clean of any corrosion. Any battery cables cracked or frayed replace. Here's the hydrometer I use. It was given to me when I retired. Hal

Always my advice.....check out one of those Optimas. They have plenty of ba--ls and start like no ones business! Find where your local Interstate warehouse is and you can get a warrenty for a lot less with a six month garenty. You will know within about two days if it is good or not. I love them! Jeffcat

Hey Harvey ,,It's been cold round here this past few weeks ,,I just bought a truck and same thing happening.. The cold takes the good outa batteries,and we've had our share..Where bouts you from I'm in fall river

Phil I'm in Wolfville, so about the same weather as you and a little cooler than in past years.

Batteries dont like heat.
Batteries in Florida dont last as long as Canada
Batteries dont like being discharged any great amount or time.
I guess battery life to be 5 to 10 years, maybe a bit shorter, maybe a bit longer.
I live in Ontario and I have a battery blanket that I plug in on the coldest nights. I figure I am doing my battery and myself a favor.

Get a good Hydrometer from a local auto dealer and check your cells after you have fully charged the battery. It will tell you if your battery is bad. They used them for many years before they got the electronic gizmos that may or may not work. The hydrometers with the thermometers are the better ones.

depends on the quality of the battery you have. The "warranty" period will tell you how long the battery should last. My PSD had 72 month batteries, lasted 5 years, I figured that was not bad.

I consider any time over two years as gravy. With all the electronics in cars today it's a wonder that they last as long as they do.

It should last more than 4 years but not always. I have a 94 Nissan pu bought new w/85000 miles and still have the original battery that came w/truck. I live at 10000 ft. in colorado so there is no set time they last. Batteries are cheap, so get a new one before you blow the alternator. Now those are pricy.

my brother just sold his 95 nissan hard body, he bot it new, still had original bettery in too, Nissan must have gotten a batch of great batteries
