I need a gearbox for a howse 5 ft bushhog. I bought a tractor that came with a bushhog that has a stripped gear and the gear is half the cost of the new bushhog. There has to be a cheaper way, otherwise its a good mower.

It takes a little investigation. Go to an industrial supply house in your and area ask for some help looking up the gear. A Boston Gear book should have the gear you need.

howse=JUNK. i had a new one and on the first job with it, the bolts that hold down the gearbox came loose and the whole gearbox was moving around while the driveshaft was turning!. they also seem to have a very light duty sheetmetal. i got rid of that thing and bought a bushhog brand. had it over 7 years now and not a bit of trouble from it.

you can get a new gear box but you might as well get a new mower. if you get a new one get one that has a larger gear box ( 50 hp. tractor 70 hp gear box with slip clutch, 70 hp tractor 100hp gear box with slip clutch.) to many times guys use the wrong bolt for a shear bolt and the end result is a junk gear box less chance with a slip clutch just my two cents worth.

Howse builds light duty homeowner stuff anyway. If you use it for anything other than a glorified lawn mower, you'll tear it up.
