Ok, please, no lectures on my stupidity. I have it bad. I hooked up my little EverStart battery charger that I got at Wal-Mart because my truck wouldn't start. Waited 'bout 30 min. and went out and started my truck without taking the battery charger off. The fan ate my charger leads. One is black with a white stripe and the other is plain black. This is a cheap little charger for about $20, I think. I like it a lot because it has 2amp and 6 amp. l like the 2 amp for trickle charging. This charger is called Basic Six. Which is + and which is -? I appreciate your help.Ya know, you realize how stupid something is when it is too late. Maybe I'm a little wiser. Thanks. Steve Carmack

Steve, you can tell from the leftover ends if there's any left. If not, use a VOM to check output at the leads The VOM will indicate + - and display the output voltage. Okay,--- here's my dumb stunt. I decided to clean out the horse/stock trailer, opened the sliding read gate, grabbed shovel and turned to enter trailer. I've hit my head on the framework several times so I remembered to duck--but not enough! I ran into the upper frame; the result was 22 stitches in my head, both eyes needed surgury to repair detached retinias, wore neck brace for 2 weeks, and now I have incureable tinnitus. Do I win the dumb/dumber prize?

My wifes uncle did the same thing Ray. He nearly died from the head injury he sustained. That sort of accident must be fairly common. I would not have thought about something like that being as serious as it apparently can be. Just another example of how suddenly a mans quality of life can change.

Here's one that I heard (I won't admit to it myself) but I heard it told in the first person, so I'll pass it along:

I got a job to remove a chimney from an old house. The pay was OK, but if I salvaged the bricks, I would really make out well. I started on the roof, above the third floor. I didn't want to bust up the bricks by throwing them down three stories, so I rigged up a barrel on a rope with a pulley and tied the rope to a tree below.

I filled the barrel up and went down to untie it. This is when I made my first mistake. I didn't realize that the barrel full of bricks was heavier than I was! My hand got caught in the rope and I was pulled up as the barrel came down. When my path crossed with the barrel it broke my collar bone. I proceeded upward until my hand jammed in the pulley and broke three of my fingers. At that time the barrel hit the ground. The impact broke the bottom out of the barrel. Without the bricks, I was now heavier than the barrel. I proceeded downward until I again crossed paths with the barrel. This time it broke my ankle. I sped downward until I met with the ground, breaking my right leg.

That was when I lost my head. I let go of the rope! The barrel proceeded downward, hitting me on the head and giving me a concussion.

That is an old (better than a year ago) false Darwin submittal.
The Internet make all thing old, new again!
And all rumors true!

Funny thing about your brick story. Ray Stevens has one of those idiot "songs" that he does, about an Irishman named Murphy who does exactly what you said.

Looks like time for fessin up.
Backing my tractor into my shop last week. Ten by ten roll up door has rope tied to bottom center of door to pull it down. Rope caught on canopy. Ripped door out of guides and bent bottom door frame. After an hour of staightening the door and removing and reattaching the door guides, I realized I had the door above the door stops and could not pull it down. Had to remove the guides and do it all over again.
Haven't told anyone I actually know about this.

I feel your pain Steve. Last week I was trying to retrofit a garage door. Naturally the lift bracket that came with the door didn't work for my application. All it amounted to was bending and cutting the existing bracket into what looked like a piece of angle iron and welding on an extension.

I welded that extension on and after grinding it smooth realizied it was on the wrong side. I cut it off, then welded it, ground it smooth, painted it, back on the wrong side again.

My wife always says I should either think about what I'm doing or else go do what it is I'm thinking about. Good advise I suppose but I hate to start listening to her now, after all these years.

Reminds me of one I pulled several years ago. I had to charge my battery to get my pickup started. I disconnected the wires, shut the hood and left the charger sitting in the driveway. Left for a couple of hours and returned home. Got out of the pickup and discovered my right front tire parked right on top of the charger. Don't feel bad You're not alone.

Steve: Yeah, I got one of those old dearly loved chargers to. Montgomery ward 1970's. Anyway if you can get inside the thing, on mine the negative wire goes to the left hand side of meter. Looking from the back. The pos. goes to a breaker swx terminal and then to transformer. The + and - wires on this are different also but no visible markings. Just 2 different types of insulation. Makes me think I should mark these in some way. Good luck..

I have never done anything like that. But one time for some unknown reason I had to figure out the + and - ends of a charger.
Try putting one wire to ground on the car and putting a ligt bulb between the + and the other wire. If the light is brighter than normal (don't put it on too long, just touch it) you have the plus to ground. If it is very dim or completely off, you have the neg to ground.

We have all done things we would rather not talk about.
Go back to Walmart. Look at a charger like yours and see which wire the red clamp is on.

Hey BB, while I was in the field I thought about it and decided to do what you said, go to wal-mart. I could have done that without fessing up. Thanks to all of yall.

Well not everyone would fess-up and tell such things on themselves, I would guess a lot of us have "been there, done that" at one time on one thing or a nother. Now on a Monday morn, my batting average would be at 50% with 75% usually wrong. I'll cast a vote for the black w/white stripe being the ground.

I agree with the man who said go to walmart. With that said I just used my craftmen charger today and the black and white wire is ground. Pretty gutsy admitting to something like that none of us ever do things like that!(YA RIGHT) the stories we could tell but won't!! hope it helped have fun and see ya!
