JD snow thrower issue

Hi,

I have a John Deere 318 yard tractor and a JD 49 Snowthrower. I hit a rock this morning and instead of breaking a shear pin, something else gave way.

On the snowthrower, Does anyone know how the primary chain sproket for the auguer system is attached to the drive shaft? Something broke at that point and I'm looking for the fix. It looks like it was welded there. Is that correct or no?? Appreciate help. Thanks.

The snow thrower has a bolt in the outer end of the auger, which the dealer informed me was the shear point. I wanted to replace this bolt to a roll pin, but as it was a government owned peice of equipment, I had to simply replace it with a new "factory original" bolt.You should see one one each end of the auger.

It has ONE shearbolt, Key #6, at the RH side of the auger:

The model that we had in Buffalo had one on each side, but it could have been a different JD model. The Coast Guard's snow thrower recieved PTO power at a gear box which sent the power to both sides of the unitwhich drove the auger via a chain and cog. Each side was actually independent, and when a shear bolt sheared, the opposite side continued to operate. This made trouble shooting pretty obvious.

Yep, the haft and sproket are sold as one piece, and appear to be welded together.

At least, you didn't break the gearcase, like I did some years ago!
