There's a young man from a neighboring town that just got sentenced to prison for involuntary manslaughter.

A pregnant girl(passenger) was killed because the guy KNOWINGLY had bald, mimatched tires including the spare on his vehicle when it lost control and hit a utility pole.

Not worth it,get a new set of four and get it over with.

When recapping at Firestone, different brands had sometimes different sizes. Enough that sometimes a 235 would have to be run as a 225 mold size.

A word of warning - do that to a vehicle with "All Wheel Drive" or a 4x4 that has an all wheel drive feature and you will be lucky if the difference in speed between tires does not ruin your t-case or overheat the differentials. I work at a Ford garage and have worked on more 4x4s than I can remember and have seen this happen! Can even happen with same brand - same size tires but different load ratings. 6ply on front 8ply on back etc. The customers usually refuse to believe this and they have to find out the hard way. The newer all wheel drives are electronically controlled and when there is a speed difference between the front and rear driveshafts the clutches in the t-case are commanded to tighten up to eliminate the "percieved slip" works great on ice and snow - not so good on dry pavement. Tell tale sign of mismatch in tire size - the drivetrain will clunk or pop or vehicle will seem to lurch - sometimes violently every so often while driving down a dry hard surface road.

It's just not a good idea. Besides a diffence in size, different brands can have different handling characteristics, depending on the specs of the tire.

Not sure about auto tires, but on small tires, not only are differant brands differant size, but differant style/model tires of the same brand are not always the same size. I sell Carlylse tires, and for instance, a 16-6.50X8 Turf Saver will be physically differant than a Turf Mate. HTH

You can replace with the same brand and the dimensions will be different. I saw a Goodyear tire replaced with indentical size on a narrow front tractor, and the new tire didn't touch the ground. So had to replace both.

Coup, I just went through this and as an old tire guy I knew to look, three same as new 225-75-15 and I looked every where for a tire to match the outside diameter(wrap a tape measure around it). This old QuadTrac Jeep wants the tires all the same diameter. And while I am thinking about it, yes tires are different diameters a 235-75-15 4ply is different from a 235-75-15 6ply(and if you really want to freak out your tire salesman the 4ply is rated to haul more weight than the 6 ply, read the side wall.
