I bought some Kerosene last night at a local gas station. Normally Kerosene is clear when I buy it. Last night it was dyed red is this normal or is this station working the system and selling off road diesel? It comes out of a big blue painted tank would a fuel distributor even put fuel in a tank like that? The people that run this station it wouldn't surprise me if they are working the system somehow.

I bought kerosene last week here in Michigan and it was clear. Red dye in diesel is for non taxed offroad fuel here.

I'm in the south Atlanta area and just tonite I went and bought ten gallons of Kerosene from the local convenience store. Paid $3.40 a gallon for it. Was the typical off clear, never seen dyed Kero. Filled up my torpedo heater and fired it up. Runs good on it. Got the temp to nearly 60 in the building (60x60x16) before I gave up for the nite. No odor.

Kerosene has been dyed red for 5 years here.Kero and diesel have a different smell.Lamps and wick burners wont handle the dye well.

I thought that all that was dyed was number 2 farm fuel because its high sulphur too. I bought some number 1 last year and it was kind of clear no dye. I think I would ask somebody else because if you had to blend your truck fuel, how could you put that dye in.I think they are selling number 2 farm fuel with antigell in it for kerosene maybe. If you ever used Power Service,it has a smell to it,you could probly smell it if you were burning it.It could be number 1 farm fuel if there is such a thing.

Dye in fuel (#1, #2, or Kero - for that matter heating fuel too) only means no road fuel tax has been paid on it. All of these fuels will run in an on-road diesel vehicle, so all of can be dyed or the seller could have legal issues - depending on the state.

Has nothing at all to do with sulfur content.

If you bought 5 gallon cans of kero in a store it likely didn't have the road tax on it - intended for heaters - so you really shouldn't be using it in the vehicle tank.

Red = no fuel taxpaid. That's all.

Heat my home with a Monitor heater on kerosene. The kerosene is delivered and has been dyed for about 4 or 5 years. no problems

I haven't purchased any kerosene in over a year, but will need to real soon. I've been seeing these blurbs on the cost of the stuff and so am a little apprehensive about having to take the plunge. The stuff I have gotten in the past has all been clear. Don't know if it's just me or what, but I can tell the differnce between kerosene and heating fuel/diesel fuel by the smell. If I use fuel oil in the torpedo heater it will stink to high heaven. #1 is a little less offensive, but still needs to be vented in a big way. Kerosene doesn't bother me at all and can be used with minimal venting. Just my observations.

In Pennsylvania now I believe all fuel, kerosene included for "off road" (read: no road tax) use is dyed red. I've found using the red stuff in my salamander heaters makes them stink more and stirs my asthma up faster. I put in another used furnace in the new building and got rid of the salamanders. I certainly wouldn't want a Kerosun or similar heater in the house.

I guess that makes sense to make it all red for non tax but we sometimes use it in the truck tank in the cold and add 10 gal or so to a tank to keep it from jelling. If its dyed we can't do that anymore.

I know what you mean about the fumes. My new garage is tight and doesn't breathe so I get the fumes. I was using some old fuel oil (20yrs) in the salamander but I got so much smoke I had to open the door so I lost all my heat. Sort of counter productive.

I'm sure the goverment could really care less about us having to use an amount of kerosene in diesel fuel to keep it from jelling. They would tell you to use diesel 911 or some other taxed additive.
In Pa you get caught with any red in your tank for any reason, your in serious trouble.
