It's a tool in the west>

Have new savage 223 heavy barrel, now I need a good scope, something that is 4-12 a maybe mil-dot or bullet compensating. Looking at Leopolid and Nikon. Your choices?
Thanks, Bill

In my opinion, Nikon scopres are the way to go. They've been building high quality optics for year and the glass coating quality will make a big diference vs. something like a bushnell. Zeiss optics are probably the best, but will cost you 3-4 times what a Nikon will.

You can name names like Zeiss and Sworvski too but it gets down to splitting hairs and pay a lot more for some of the names that won't make a difference for even the above average shooter. World class guys, and there are few of them, can get the extra edge in world class equipment, but thats not most of us.

I have both Nikon Monarch and Leoupold Vari-X scopes and I doubt most people could tell the difference in them, I can't. I think you'll be happy with either while spending more on either than the Savage costs.

PS: Love those BDC (bullet drop compensating) scopes!

Dad always swore by Leupold scopes, but I never had good luck with them. After having 2 of them go bad on a .300 mag, I put a Bushnell 3X9 bushmaster on it. haven't had a problem since.
Your results may vary.

Since many varmits are nocturnal and must be shot after dark it is necessary to light up the reticules. Try a burris scope. If you only shoot at short distances in the daylght then you can get away with a much less expensive Burris 3X9 unlit scope. The Burris will stand up to the sharp recoil of the rifle.

Leopolid MrkIII. Never had any luck with a Bushnel myself. Any of the shotgun scopes and the 4x12 on my .223 suffered wandering points of aim.

i would either go with the nikon monarch or the bushnell 4200 elite, they are both very nice scopes an about the same money. i have one of the bushnells an 2 of the nikons. with the glass you get what you pay for. thats just my 2 cents worth. some will differ i am sure

Have a Redfield wide angle on a .270 Gibbs wildcat that is one h**l of a good scope although my dad likes his Leopold 3x9 on a 6mm Ruger #1.Both are good varmint rifles.
