Just put 300 gallons into my gas tank. it has a small pinhole leak at the bottom!! Can anyone suggest a way of stopping it without draining it dry?

you might takea center punch and try and peen the hole shut. Maybe stop till you can get fixed with Jb or something

JB weld in the stick form need together and stick it on push it right in to the hole stoped the leaks on fuel tank on truck

Since June, I have removed and cut in half 26 home heating oil tanks. All but one had corrosion on the bottom.

One tank was a leaker prior to my arrival onsite. The leaking heating oil was dripping into a bucket at about 2 gallons per day. The owner had placed a magnet designed to stem the flow but it did not work. I presume that was due to the radius of the tank bottom.

After I put the tank on its side in the back of my truck, I gently poked the pinhole with a screwdriver. With vitually no force, an area the size of a dime fell into the tank.

I suggest that you do not attempt any repair of your tank. Replace it immediately.

About 50 years ago I bought one of those 275 gallon oil tanks that had a new bottom welded on it. It never leaked in 12 years and I then I sold the place. Cost was $25.00 and oil was about 15 cents per gallon. Hal

Tanks can be surprising. I mentioned that one tank had no corrosion. What was unusual is that the installation permit was dated from 1946. I have removed five gallons of oil saturated rust from other tanks bearing code tags only 10-15 years old.

This job is a part time thing for me. I do it for the oil. I have become an 'energy hoarder'. I have collected over 3500 gallons of oil, 8 tons of anthracite coal, 200 lbs of propane, and lots of stove-cut cord wood. I even got 7 sealed barrels of free hydraulic, gear, and turbine oil. I sold the barreled oil immediately for a nice profit.

At the moment, I am paying $1.00/gal for the heating/diesel oil. I expect I will be able to get it for free again next spring and summer. My out-of-pocket expense is nothing as I charge for tank removals. My storage tank is about 2/3 full and I will either quit or have to sell fuel later this winter.

All my leads come from Craigslist. My traveling radius is around 40 miles but I did go over a hundred miles for 300 gallons in ME. I found 6500 gallons in NH but I don't think I am going to be able to buy, transport, and sell it conveniently. Storage is out of the question.

Peter --- the right thing to do is use common sense -- get another tank -- pump your gas by transfer pump and it's done ...

The problem with using a sheet metal screw with a washer is that the area surrounding the pinhole is usually rusted too thin for the screw to hold. Then you wind up with a 1/8" hole istead of a pinhole.

Put some SealAll on it. It is sold in a small red and yellow tube at most hardware stores. I had the same problem once, and that's what my fuel man recommended. It works.

Likely your tank is full of pinholes all ready to leak, so you are looking at replacing it right? One pinhole made it through, many others are ready to.

I understand wanting to get it fixed for the moment, others have good advise on how.

Our local Napa store has a gas tank repair kit they sell. We've used on tractror and trucks and works great. It has a putty stick to stop the leak and then some 2-peice epoxy to mix together along with a fiber mesh. Sets up fast

We used to use a sheetmetal screw with a rubber washer on it for a leaky water tank... not shure how it would work with gas..

Many auto parts stores stock a putty stick for stopping leaks on gas tanks.

Of course, it's not the best repair, but it may hold until you empty the tank of liquid gold.

I can remember a retired army guy showing me a stick of a substance they used to seal gas tanks. It was in a cardboard tube, that you could peel back and apply it to the leaking tank. I cannot remember the name of that product...

We used to use "Fels Naptha" soap on our stove oil drums. Worked!

When I saw the word "storage", I assumed you meant underground. If so, don't tell anybody because you will be paying hazardous waste cleanup for a long time. Know a fella lost his gas station-party store over this. He wasn't even using the tank but the government held him responsi ble.
