I do buy more stuff from Ebay than I probably should, but beats the heck out of driving a couple hours to get to a bigger city if I need something not available locally. I prefer to be sitting at the computer towards the end of the auction on bigger stuff I buy, but even refreshing the screen doesn't always give me enough time to recover from sniper software. Plus, I can't always be home when auctions end. I am going to have to give in, and play the game the way it is now, meaning sniper software. BUT, I have a couple big concerns, the biggest one being how do I know the sniper ware won't load a virus, keylogger, or a bunch of cookies on my computer? The second one is, I just don't think that is an honest way to win auctions. Any ideas how to make sure any software I would buy is "clean"? DOUG

you don't need the special software. Jus bid what yooou want to pay. If someone bids more at the last, you may be out bid, but you could still be outbid if you wait also. What differance does it make except to waste your time sitting there at the computer waiting for the end?

I use a kitchen timer and if the price is still in my range I bid with 5 seconds to go.I usually win about 75% of the auctions that I bid on.If I cant be there at the end I put a bid in for all I can stand.I usually win nearly half of them.

One thing about ebay is that the item you are bidding on will always show up again if you dont win it the first time.I like ebay just the way it is.Its let me buy stuff that I would have never found on my own.

I do not use ebay, partly because of this type of bidding and other things that do not seem fair to me. The auctions I use contnue, just like a live auction, until no one bids for five minutes. If some one runs you up and then backs out they are banned from bidding on future auctions.

We've been buying/selling since ebay started.
we just use a count down timmer to win them.

NEVER Bid ahead of time, it gives others time to jack the price up on you.
Long before the end of auction I determine exactly what is the most I am willing to pay for the Item.
Then within the last 5 minutes I syncronize my timmer to the Ebay time.
I usually throw my max bid at about 3-5 sec before the end. This leaves them NO time to make another bid.
Back when we got our TD-9 our winning bid went in at 1.5 seconds before the end.

No programs, yes you have to be there to put in the bid, but it will beat most of the snipes because they usually bid more than 5 sec before the end.

I use the same method. There is no point in showing your hand until 2 to 5 seconds before the bids close.

To make this easier on your 'ticker', buy a countdown clock at eBay. The auction title is

"TALKING-COUNTDOWN-EBAY-AUCTION-BID-TIMER-CLOCK"

One time I bid on a simple cast iron handle/crank with a 3/4 square hole, perfect for a handle for the bed lift winch on my Dake press. It was .99 and I bid $9 on it. For the next couple of days, it was "picked at" one dollar at a time, by the same bidder, until it got to $8, then they stopped. I won it for $8+. I paid the $8 plus reasonable shipping, could have had it for .99 had this shill not bid it up and got out. I quit bidding early, I wait till the last 15 seconds or so. Bad manners? unfair? not sportsmanlike? what do I care? If the seller wants more money. list it for a reasonable starting bid (and yes, no one will bid on it) or a reasonable buy it now.

Just today I bought 30 lbs of Certanium 702 welding rod. The shipping on 30 lbs is stiff, so I guess the bidders were unwilling to place high proxy bids, they were bidding it up a dollar or two at a time. At a little over $2 a pound (inc shipping) I think I got a reasonable deal, anxious to see how good it welds.

Free for several time a week. If your bid is too low,no body ever know that you tried. I like it to beat those guys that try to steal something the last minute or two, or those that would run you up. Kennyp...Coloken

Nothing to buy or load on your computer. Just register at one of many sites and let them do the bid. The one I use gives me several free snipes a week with out charge and bids my bid at 8 seconds to go. All ways bid your top price, you could get it lower but that way if you don't get it, you can walk away happy. Redidulas to keep raising each other several days early.

Dick and Doug,
I think you are both kinda right.

BUT, as the wife says... "why do you care about watching the bid, enter the max amount you want to pay and be done, it if goes higher you would have been outbid anyway, whether it was the last second or 2 days before it ended.

I think the problem is someone runs software to max out your bid, then they "withdraw" the bid and the buyer offers it to you at your high bid.
Fancy shill bidding to me.

I do love to bidding at the last second on the things I buy. Hopefully to get them as cheap as possible.

Looks like a good possibility, as well as coloken suggestion. I like the idea of off my computer bidding site, I am willing to pay the 1 percent or 5 dollars a month as on these two suggested sites. Gives me some peace of mind that I am not going to load a virus or worse. DOUG

The only way you can win a ebay auction from me with sniper soft ware is to be willing to bid higher than I am willing to pay. I do not see how that is dishonest. I do make bids in the last few seconds but when I put my bid in the item it is at the most I am willing to pay. If you use use sniper soft ware you have to do the same. Items that should sell for 30 dollars and I want it real bad, which does not happen often, I will put a 100 dollar bid. Your software might make me pay 99 dollars for a 30 dollar item or you would get it for 101 dollars if you wanted it that bad. That is what auctions are about. If a person wants to use ebay and dont like the auction system they should just use the buy it now sales.

I usually bid my max early on something I don't care that much if I win or lose. For something I want I usually want until the end. That way if a shill is running it up, they get stuck with it. And they don't have time to run up last minute bids.

I don't think it's unethical to wait until the past second, just the way the game is played.

I understand totally bidding the most I am willing to pay when I place my original bid. That is exactly the way I always used to do it. Funny thing is, if I do that, it will generate a LOT of bidding activity in the next few hours, then it will all go away until the last 2 or 3 minutes of the auction, often the last 30 seconds. I don't see the need to show my hand too far ahead of time, I have indeed have stuff I have been snipered on come back up for sale after the fact and won it the second time around. Sometimes it is a deadbeat buyer, but also wonder if could maybe be shill bidding. DOUG

I agree, would rather not let other potential buyers or shills know that I'm interested. It saves me money..... .. just that simple. I too used to think that you just bid and sat back and waited, then watched it bid up and they back out, or get beat out and then offered it as a "backup" buyer (cause their shill bid too much and "won" the auction). You get tired of being taken by sellers who bid it up with a shill.
