B-vent draft hood question

I know there are lots of posts in here on heaters so hopefully someone will know this.

My house has a gas fireplace insert that sealed (glass front that doesn't open). On top it has a draft hood, then it goes into the b-vent.

Problem, this open draft hood sucks a bunch of warm air out of the room.

Can I get rid of the draft hood and make this a tight connection right to the top of the gas log insert?

If not how can I get it to stop sucking all the warm air out of the room. I know a direct vent wouldnt have this problem.

Thanks,
Rick

Hi rick,

Thermal dampers are not usually allowed by code on residental gas appliances. The damper needs to tie into the safety control circuit as it has to come open first to purge the combustion chamber of gas before igniting.

A gas appliance is nothing more than a controlled explosion!!!

DO NOT redesign gas appliances as there's too many design considerations for your faimilys safety.

T-bone, I know you are near the Flint area, want a quick side job installing two of these auto dampers?

"A gas appliance is nothing more than a controlled explosion!!!"

Well said. I see no problem tying into the the valve circuit with an automatic damper. Looks straight forward.

Of course I had to ask about thermal dampers ($20-50) versus automatic ($160).

Do not remove the draft hood, it's part of the appliance. You can add an automatic vent damper. If ypu can find one. They were very popular before the condensing furnaces.

Dusty,

I found thermal and automatic dampers. Looks like the automatic dampers are still common. The thermal ones are still around to.

The thermal it looks like it would be no problem. The auto will need to be tied into the gas valve.

Any suggestions or suprises I need to look out for?

Thanks
Rick

I needed two six inch auto vent dampers last year, and was told that they had been discontinued. I found two, one each in two different locations. After I got them one customer backed out, so I now have one on the shelf looking for a new home.
