Ten tears ago I would say only the big M tools, then they priced themselves out of the ball park around here. Swithes, brushes, and cord break downs were my biggest complaints. I refuse to argue about what is better etc.

In our area the super sawzalls are not used a whole lot as the guys always used the regular M sawzall. After a lot of disapointment our local lumber yard said that my opinion was the norm, as others had spoke the same.

In our area the D word is pretty big, I have had I think three DeWalt corded units, and were a hundred dollars, I did not expect much, and I got buy ok, probably would do it again, switch on the last one wiould not completly stop, never had that problem with any tool before.

Sorry M fans, but I will never own another one, I have alot of older ones, and they did pretty good overall, just can't buy there parts pricing concept. Some HF parts are interchangable on M tools. The electric tin snips comes to mind, I buy the HF unit, and take the replacable blades off and put them on the M tool. (Snips) were made in the same factory without any doubt, and placed on different power units. I can buy the off brands at TSC for $49.00, in 1974 the replacment jaws were $60.00 and change for M unit.

It is hard for us old guys to get used to the use and toss format now days, but it seems to be the better way any more.

Portor and cable is my choice in corded sawzall it has more power and is smoother that dewalt. Dewalts quick change is better. For some one that doesnt use it everyday might not notice much difference. Dewalts cordless tools are awesome and can stand tons of abuse and last along time. I bought a ridgid kit to try its junk heavy and the batterys are horrible. Im a plumber and use these tools almost everyday.

Between the two I'd pick Milwaukee, I have a Makita and that works great

I would think for home use, and if your choices are limited to Dewalt and Milwaukee, go with the Dewalt. We've got one that must be 10 years old and it runs great.

The only complaint I have is that it doesn't have the quick change head on it like the newer ones do, but we tape the allen wrench right to the saw so that isn't much of a problem anymore.

We've also got a cordless Ridgid that came in an 18V tool kit and it works good, but the battery life on the saw is fairly short. Could be that I always grab the battery that isn't as full as it could be too...

I aquired a Ryobi for cheap price a few years ago and it has done everything I've asked of it. If I were buying one, I'd go with the Milwaukee, they still make a pretty good product. All of them made today have some kind of quick change blade system.

One thing to look for is a 'quick change head'.
On my PC you turn a collar and the blade pulls out
on my older Ryobi I'm always hunting for / fumbling with a metric allen wrench.

I think your question is the answer, what kind of "sawzall". Some makers just stand out as the best, same as: vicegrip, channellock, skillsaw, snap on tool box, weller solder gun, bernzmatic torch, new holland baler, new idea picker, portaband, dodge trucks, deere tractors, kitchen aid dishwashers, maytag washer,s&w revolver, sorel boots, and etc.... jmho Dan

Im a big Milwaukee fan.Sawzall prices seem to vary alot between various supply houses so check around before purchasibg.{Porter cable tiger saw has a nice feel also.]How about a Bosch jig saw if its applicable. Its a beautiful tool and carbide faced blades are available.Does not eat blades like a sawzall.[Milwaukees name for reciprocating saw]

i have a porter cable and a milwaukee super sawzall. both nice saws. the porter is a lighter saw in weight. no problems with either. if you are considering milwaukee, they have the regular and the super. the big difference between em is in the stroke lenght of the blade. the super is a lot longer stroke, cuts nice but if you are plunge cutting and trying not to hit something behind the cut, ie studs and drywall, the super has a habit of banging the blade tip.

I bought a generic brand off of ebay (gave about $30.00 for it)and have not had a problem with it. If it is something you plan to use daily I would go with a Milwaukee, but if it just going to get used once in a great while, why spend the big bucks when the cheaper brand will do.

I'm all for top dollar, high quality tools, but it isn't always necessary. My brother owns/operates an auto body/mechanical shop. Somehow he ended up with a Craftsman sawzall he got from one of his employees. I'll bet that thing is 15 years old. It is all beat up but is the only one in the shop and gets used daily.

Now for the hot button: I have Harbor Freight's best one. I have had it for a year, used it seriously 3-4 times...Works just fine.

Hi Maark,

Ditto rockyhawaii's comment. Unfortunately, all that really tells you is that if you're buying a Sawzall 25 years ago, definitely go with the Milwaukee.

The old Milwaukees have a switch inside the handle for high or low speed. I tell onlookers it's for forward and reverse, like a drill. Nobody has called me on it yet.

All the best, Stan

I have both Milwaukee and Dewalt products. I like them both. Recently bought a cordless Dewalt sawzall from a tool store that sells both brands. The salesman recomended Milwaukee for a corded product and Dewalt for cordless. I took his advice as he has seen a lot more products.

I'm a carpenter and As far as sawzalls go, I've used the milwaukees, dewalts, and porter cables. For Hard core longevity go with the porter cable. for the price go with dewalt. for a nice medium, take the milwaukee. I like my dewalt and have never had any trouble. Theyre not as tough as they used to be, but still quality products. For home use really a black and decker might be ok. Dewalt is made by them, and they share Some common parts. Look at the amp rating to compare. Some models used to be exactly the same. Our plumber has the exact same old B&D sawzall as the Dewalt one i have, but the difference was i think an 8 and 9 amp motor. but otherwise the same. He got his for a lot less though.

I've got both and "Take your pick" Milwaukee seems to have slower RPM than the Dewalt. This is not good some times.
