I've got a 99 chev 1500 ls, that the dash lights don't come on until it warms up or hit a bump (sometimes)..Also, when I fill up my gas guage won't work, until I've driven about 50-100 miles than it works mostly..any ideas, or have you had the same problem..deanop

I received a notice that my 2004 GMC could have problems with the gauges. "The instrument panel gauge may stick, flutter or become inoperative. This may cause inaccurate readings, including the speedometer and the fuel gauge." If this happens they will repair it up to seven years or 70,000 miles. May be worth checking. Their number is 1-866-996-9463.

Received the same letter about a month ago for 2003 Chev 2500HD. Entire instrument panel was renewed in that truck under warranty in 2005, no problems since.

Yep those trucks are notorious for bad grounds. I added plenty all over mine to avoid problems on the advise of Chevy truck forums.

I think you may have two different problems that are unrelated.
The dash lights could be a variety of things from a bad dimmer switch, to wiring, or a loose connection. Try adjusting the dimmer switch to a different position to see if they work better. I have also seen the connector for the headlight switch/dimmer melted.
The fuel gauge issue could be a worn out fuel sender, sulphur build up on the sender, or possibly but unlikely, the gauge itself. Good luck,

I have a 01 Silverado with the same fuel gauge issues. More then likely it's the fuel sending unit. Expensive part and involves dropping the tank to get at it. Mines been that way for over a year now. One of these days I'm going to change it out.
