I bought an 056 Stihl chainsaw as a fixer - the problem it has is that the engine will not rev up. Though it starts right up and seems to have good compression. The adjustment screws seem to have very little effect on how it runs. I did put new gaskets and diaphragm in the carb and cleaned the carb completely "dipped it and blew out all passages" I did not change fuel fiter or fuel line yet. But am thinking of doing that next - the filter looks ok visually. But I am wondering if the line could be letting air in or collapsing? Or could I have bigger problems? Any body out there with some advice?
Thanks in advance.

O56 is one of the best saws Stihl ever made. I've got two 045 Supers - which are bascically, the same saws as the 056.

You can drive yourself nuts unless - you first check the crankcase for sealing. If it leaks, the carb can never work right nor will the fuel pump draw fuel properly.

I have the Stihl crankcase test kit with all the adpaters for all Stihl saws - so it's easy for me. Not so easy without. But - leaks are usually obvious and are almost always from the crankshaft seal on the sprocket side.

I assume you looked into the exhaust port at the piston and rings and verified nothing is scored there?

Yep - piston and cylinder look ok. I bought this saw knowing 056 saws are one of the better ones out there. When I get it going I expect it will give me many years of use.

the other day while working on a my new building a friend helping me went to saw off a pole. saw wouldn"t rev up. he was getting ready to do some adjusting on it. i said hold up check the kick back lock was on i know it sounds dumb. but make sure your kick back lock is released on chain.

Good idea - but while woking on it I do not even have the chain brake housing on the saw. I should say the saw will idle but will not rev up and starts running rough when you open the throttle. I might play with it some more today.

Thanks again guys.

RY when you do get it running, come back and tell us about it. This way we can all learn.

If the other suggestions don't help, you might want to check the crank seals. They don't run too well if they are sucking air. Got a husky on the work bench right now somebody scrapped. Would start and run but had to have the needles way out and still no power. Crank bearings were bad and chewed up one seal. Also aquired a stihl concrete saw in a basket at an auction. Had a hole in the piston and a bad crank seal. Not the first thing to check, but definately a possibility.

If you are talking it falls on its face and dies, then you have a fuel supply problem, probably a cracked fuel line, etc. Now if you are talking it wants to accelerate, but will not, you might have an exhaust plugged up. I have seen wasp nest, carbon,a lot will plug it up.

Oh yeah I forgot to say that I did clean the muffler out as well - still did not help.

Tempted to just take the whole thing apart and go through it completely. New crank seals and all. It is a nice saw and might be worth it.

Make sure that the little line in the gas tank is still hooked up. They are noted for going bad, shuold be able to see in there with a flash light.

sounds like a fuel supply problem. Pull the fuel supply line off the carb, open the fuel tank, put a drinking straw in there, seal the opening around the saw with a plastic bag, blow on the straw and see if fuel is being fed to carb. then you will know if filter isn't clogged or you have a cracked fuel line somewhere. Also check to see if breather tube is not clogged. Gas cap may have hole for breather, if so make sure it is clear.

Check muffler to see if carbon has it about stopped up.

Ditto on checking the exhaust port and muffler, too rich a mixture over time and it will choke it out, can"t run full throttle if it can"t breathe.
