if i remember, the L stands for lousiville, the hundred vs thusand denoted gas or diesel and the 8 or 9 designates gvw. my first diesel dump was an old ford with an 1150 cat, the early version of the 3208. they were a pretty good motor iff you took care of em. not the most powerful or neck snapping performance, but you are in a dump truck, not an indy car. she will get you from point a to point b. the governor on mine kicked in at 58 mph. that was it. critical thing with them old cats is NEVER rev them up when they are cold!!!! start em, and let them idle, they need to get warm and get good oil pressure before you work em, if you dont, you WILL scatter the motor!!

tHAT 477 uses the gas. Ran great for the past 4-5 years. Now it has just started giving me trouble. Stall out going down the road--maybe stall at idle. Maybe run for 3 hours then act up--go another couple of hours and act up again. Can't depend on it.
Changed the inline gas filter and the big cannister gas filter under the hood.
Have great spark out of the coil.
Filters had a lot of small grit in them--very fine stuff.
Thinking I have a carb. problem. Will start up after much rolling over--then can restart a dozen times with just a hit of the key. Let it sit for a couple of hours and then can't restart.
It has an electric external fuel pump.
Any ideas out there????? ??

Thanks Larry I am going to check all the lines out. Always enjoy your hard work and the sharing you do down there in Ohio.
You probably get a little less gas mileage than I do with that big ole Ford.

I have a 82 L8000 10 wheel grain truck with a 3208 cat diesel. It is not turbo. Mine is very underpowered. I'm not familiar with the 477 Gas engine but would imagine it would be a gas hog. I get about 6-7 MPG with the cat. If L8000 you are looking at has a turbo that would be a big plus. The cat engine is basically a throw away, so take that into consideration. They are also getting pretty old. I had a valve seat come apart in mine and had to replace a piston and it was hard to find. I finally found one from an old dealer that was going out of business. Hope this helps
