Recently found a 5/8" John Deere wrench in a piece of equipment that I purchased. It had a tool box on it and this wrench was in it. I don't know how old it is. It seems like a real good quality tool. It appears to be similar to some of my MAC wrenches. Does anyone know who made John Deere wrenches?

Bonney and Utica Tool in reply to Gleanerguy, 12-06-2007 07:19:44
They were made by Bonney and Utica Tool Company. I've got many that I started buying in the mid 1970s up to late 80s. All are lifetime guaranteed - but . . . I see now that many of the new replacements are Chinese and not the same as the originals. I've got Deere open-end wrenches, 1/4", 1/2", and 3/4" drive rachets and sockets - and also a Deere welder and 1000 watt gas-generator. I used to buy the stuff because I got a good discount working for Deere dealers.

The original Deere wrenches were nice because they were long and thin. They broke easier than some others, though. On the other hand, the Deere sockets were thicker walled than most and did not always fit tight spots.

I'm wondering if Utica is still in business. The best pliers I own were made by Utica, and I've had them 25 years. But I don't see them advertised or on shelves any more.

As far as I know, Bonney/Utica was bought out by Cooper, and then closed. I know the plant at Orangeburg, SC has been closed at least 10 or 15 years. I always liked Bonney tools, in fact, I bought a few at the flea market last week.

Don't know who makes them for Deere but they do offer two open end sets that are fully polished. One set is made in USA and the other is Taiwan made.

I've had a set of the US made for years, excellent quality, never had problems.
