Yesterday I was driving on an errand, and I heard a very low-flying jet plane. I looked up all around and couldn't make it out. Got closer and closer, and suddenly I spotted a large Railroad maintenance vehicle parked on a track near an overpass. The vehicle had a boom on the back, and mounted on that boom was the unmistakeable shape of a jet engine! It was angled at about a 15 degree angle, and looked like it was being used to thaw out a section of track so they could work on it. Was probably from a DC-9 or 727, it was pretty big. I bet it ran through a fair amount of fuel also. It made my day!

They are used to dry racetracks as well.

It's what they call a jet snow blower. They are used to clear snow and ice from areas where we need to work on switches, etc. You can see a picture of one here:
