I have a Winchester 12 gauge, commonly called the model 1887. Have been poking around on enough web sites to figure out by the serial number it was made in 1897. It has been in the family as long as I can remember, just don't know if it is worth spending the 45 dollars to get the "birth certificate" from a company in Wyoming that claims to have all the info on the guns from day one including any mods done. I know I really shouldn't be firing this gun, but it has never been retired from use as a varmit shotgun, until it set for about 10 years because my mom was afraid to fire it. Her mom sure as H wasn't afraid of it. Cleaned it up enough to fire a couple weeks ago using a light load, fired a couple shells thru it, all is well. NOT going to sell it, but just wonder what it might roughly be worth. From what I understand, I probably have went as far on cleaning up this gun as I dare go. I have only steel wooled the rust from the metal without taking anything apart. I am thinking just gun oil it, and call it good. Would love to be able to still hunt with it, but I understand this was built for black powder shells, not the modern smokeless. DOUG

I had a Winchester 87 shotgun for a while. Paid $800 for it and sold it for $1400 about 7 years later. I figured the condition was about 75%.

You shouldn't shoot modern loads in yours. They were made in the black powder era and thats what I shot in the one I had. Also note the 1887s have a 2-5/8" chamber and modern 2-3/4" shells should not be fired in it.

Don't go crazy with the steel wool as it will remove the finish. Keeping it oiled is a good idea but don't soak it down.

If you value it as a family keepsake, spend some $$ and buy a good gun safe. Some of the real top end ones may protect it from fire (mine wont) but I just dont want it to end up in a pawn shop to pay for some meth heads anhydrous ammonia!

Those lever action shotguns started getting higher priced after Arnold used one in Terminator 2. Today, they seem to be on the market from $600 to $1500+ depending on condition.
They are a nice addition to a Winchester collection.

I have a 20+ year hold gun traders guide, and your gun is listed as solid frame 10 or 12 gauge made from 1887 to 1901. it weights 8 lb. The delux model had a damascus barrel. 1986 repeter was listed worth $475.

the Winchester Model 1897 has an exposed hammer. The model 12 was a later version with an internal hammer. They were both pump shotguns.

I'm almost sure he's not talking about a '97 pump. An '87 is a lever action shotgun with a little bitty hammer that'll get you killed if you don't really hang on to it when you let if off of full cock.:^) They're a pretty neat old shot gun and have appreciated in value in the last couple of years along with all Winchesters. I've seen a lot of high asking prices at gun shows, $700-800 for a fair one, but I've never seen any money change hands either. Asking is one thing, gettin's another.

My Bluebook shows it at $3,000 in 100% condition, $1,800 in 80%, $1,200 in 60%.

Cleaning a gun is like cleaning coins, actually reduces the value to others. Value to you however is a different story. If the gun only has a light patina finish I would do nothing but clean it good with something like EEzOx gun lubricant that will, by itself (on a soft cloth) remove the excess patina. If the gun has heavy rust on it, something more will have to be done to preserve it. I have provided a link to a recent link on this forum, "Rust On Guns" in which I give a link to the EEzOx.

some of those older guns are worth a lot more in the last few years because of the "Cowboy shooting" craze. Winchester 1897 shotguns that sold for $200 a few years ago are now selling for $800

Then they started reproducing them and the prices have dropped. You may get more like $250-350 for an 1897 but this guy is suspose to have an older model gun ?

USE BRASS WOOL! it wont take the blue off. Dont clean it up AT ALL. Spent a buck on the "birth certificate" the gun does not owe you anything, and its neat. I"ve been out to the Cody Wyo Museum
and its well worth seeing, btw....Those gun price books are really off MOST of the time 1 way or the other. Get a "GUN LIST" magazine and find a gun show near you and take it..AC

Well according to my Firearms collectors manual the 1887 lever action standard shotgun is worth $2500 in excellent condition,$1500 in very good condition, and $850 in good condition.I would be wary of any birth certificate,it won't add to the value.

A collector would look up the value just like i did.

That's a pretty neat looking piece,take good care of it.If it were mine it would be retired as a conversation piece. You could damage or destroy it's value by shooting the wrong stuff through it.

Chuck,
The "birth certificate" he is referring to is a factory letter from the Winchester Museum in Cody, Wyoming and is gleaned from the remaining factory records. I tells when it was sent to the warehouse and when it was shipped, the original specifications of the gun, and any other information they have on it. They do NOT assign a value to the gun.
