Before i tear into something i am going to regret,is there a troubleshooting website or does anyone have any experience with these saws? All the connections seem alright as does the sparkplug wire. I read in the archives about a set of points under the flywheel, but this saw appears to have a
module of some kind with no wires headed underneath the flywheel.

Or would it be best just to haul it to the shop?

I have not checked the switch,i have two other Stihls and they have been excellent tools. My 028 is pushing 20 years now i would guess.

This 023 i got for nothing it was incredibly dirty, looked like someone was cutting railroad ties with it.All polished up now, just need some spark and she should start.

Make sure there is no rust on the magnets on the flywheel. Then run a dollar bill between the flywheel and ignition coil assy. Pull the wire off the kill switch.{maybe a bad switch} Then test for spark. If no go, probably the coil/ignition module has gone bad.Have you pulled the spark plug and grounded it as you pull the starter rope to check for spark? Could be a bad plug also.

I was playing with it today and i would get one spark out of about 10 pulls on the cord. I have three plugs i've tried so i don't think that's the problem. I will give it a dollar bill buff job and see what happens. Thanks

If it has magnets they may have lost their magnetism. These are what creates your hot spark
when they pass by that module. Hal

Agreed.

One of the most common failures on these homeowner Stihls is that people force the Master Control Lever down to the choked position without squeezing the throttle which eventually wears down the retainers on the lever`s shaft. Eventually the shaft moves out of it`s designed position and grounds the on/off switch at all times, consequently no spark.
