I aquired an Apple IMac and nothing happens when pushing the on button except a springy, metalic like sound. Does this thing have some kind of fuse or relay? I need to know how to open the case. There's only 2 screws on the bottom. All the rest looks like it snaps together. Thanks

Hey Poke -

Did you buy it used or new? If used, did they represent it as working??


Nothing at all comes on the screen? No cooling fans turn on?

It is pretty common for power supplies to fail on regular PC's. I'm not as up on Mac's, but know it is liable to be a common failure point on them, too..

A tenant dumped it because it wouldn't turn on. It only makes a slight metalic sound when the switch is pressed, then nothing, no fan or other noise. It's a 600SE, the one that's triangular shaped.

That is a an older IMac that doesn't appear to be worth a lot (based on Ebay results), so it probably wouldn't be worth putting much money into.

Thanks, Howard. I have discovered that it's a G3 and not a 600SE, which does not show up anywhere on eBay. There are lots of G3 units and all seem to have slightly different speeds, ram and hard drives. Maybe the color indicates what's inside. Mine is clear and is a duplicate of eBay item #270193656461. I see that part of your link has G3 in it. I can copy the link but there is no "paste" choice when I try to put it in Yahoo! Search. I used to have Google, but since AT&T took over they removed Google and gave me Yahoo!
So everything has to be typed in. I'll try it.

What are you...a 15 year old nerd? How do you come up with all that jibberish? It's worse than a foreign language! All kidding aside, I looked at some of the iMac models on the net and it appears mine is a 600SE, the one with the clear case. I went to your site but nothing turns up for that model in the first 5-6 pages with untold more pages to go. And some of the other models have the same problem

Don't know much about those but found this on the web:

Try resetting PMU (Power Manager Unit)

1. Be sure that the computer is shut down completely and cool.
2. Disconnect all cables except the power cord.
3. Touch any metal surface on the computer to ground yourself, remove the power cord, and open the computer.
4. Press the PMU reset button, but only once. It is located on the motherboard, probably near the battery and unlabeled, very tiny, and it's the only button.
5. Close the computer, reconnect all cables, and turn it on.

I can't even figure out how to open the thing. I only see two screws on the bottom and not sure what they do. Maybe they hold the PCB. The case looks like it snaps together, but I don't want to break anything.
