Also you need to know the electrical efficiency of the ballast. They are never 100%.

My 400 watt MH fixtures draw 4.0 amps at 120 volts, thats 480 watts (power factor means the fixture draws more than the bulb is rated at). My last Georgia Power bill was billed at .1198 or just under .12 cents per Kw/hr. Thus I'm looking at just under .06 cents per hour per light. When they are all installed (12 of 'em), I'll be looking at about .72 cents per hour. Couple that with flo lights over the workbench and ocassional air compressor operation and I'm looking at about $1 an hour to work in my shop after dark.

Unless you have an inductive or capacitive load, your power factor will be 1.0

The inductance in a lamp is almost negligible, so your 400W bulb should draw 400VA.

MH lights are driven by a ballast, thus is an induction load and I got the amp draw right off the ballast housing, and have confirmed this with an ampmeter. Bulb is rated at 400w but consumption is 480w.

Hi Charles,

I'd rate that as about the least money a fellow could spend to have a good time.

All the best, Stan

Cheaper than a lot of other things I could be "getting in trouble" doing!

I have a guy (the contractor who erected the building 7 years ago) who is going to loan me a manlift to do the conduit and light install, I just gotta get with him. He is semi retired and only occasionally erects a metal building nowdays. Hopefully with winter here, he won't be doing much and I can keep the "hijacker" for a while. I have 12 lights, plus one spare. All matching, 400 watt MH with open bottomed polycarbonate reflectors (good uplighting to eliminate the "cave effect") that came from a Sams Club. Seems Wally World and Sams are converting to T8 flourescents. I think the liability of the open bottomed MH fixtures (now banned for new installs by NEC in public places) coupled with the extra energy consumption, caused them to start converting over.

1000 watts equal 1 kilwatt so a 400 watt bulb will use 1-kw in 2 1/2 hrs as for cost would depend on your elec.co. find your last bill and divide the # of kw's used into the total
