I need kerosene for my Knipco (salmander type) heater. I have been calling everyone who USED to sell it. Going in an ever expanding radius, all are saying had it last year, but we don't sell it anymore. Still haven't found it, now am at 100 miles out. Brings up a couple questions. I am thinking maybe JET A fuel will work, but need to be at airport between 8 and 5. MIGHT make it there before 5 if I took the fuel cans to work with me, but they would probably frown on me hauling mail will fuel cans in my car. Second question, with the new formula diesel, I am wondering if I could get away with running it, especially this time of the year, as the stuff coming out of the pumps should either now be blended with Number 1 diesel or at least winterized.
Just don't want to screw up the heater, but I guess it doesn't much matter if I can't use it for lack of fuel. DOUG

Jet A can be used as kerosene. In fact when you were buying kerosene you may have been buying Jet A labled as kerosene. The only differance is how clean it is and under what rules it is handled or transported.
Your next option would be pure #1 diesel. It is just dirty kerosene.

When you start moving down the list to #2 diesel it becomes more of a health concern than if the heater will burn it. That smell that #2 diesel gives off in a unvented heater is unburned parts of the fuel that you are dumping into the air.

If you can get Jet A by all means do so. I've been using it for years in my torpedo heaters. In my case, it's free. I use the drain samples they take from fuel farm tanks and jet aircraft on a daily basis. They're glad to get rid of it.

Mt. Sterling airport is cheapest in the area at $3.65 a gallon. much of it is over $4.

Not sure where you are. Airport identifier for Macomb is MQB The AirNav.com av fuel price watch will give you all prices within 55 miles of the airport you enter the identifier for.

If you need airport identifiers, go to Google Earth and make sure airports layer is activated and then click on the airport and it will give you the info.

I do indeed have the AOPA airport directory, if I can find it. My AOPA number is 03580918, don't need to look it up, know it by heart. Started taking lessons, but had to postpone getting my licence as trying to get too many other bills paid off. Lost some of the incentive for getting pilot licence on January 27, 2005 when my mother passed away of a massive heart attack at age 64, she wasn't feeling well when she went to work that morning, she left work to go 1.5 miles home to get my sister to drive her to the hospital, but only made it half way there before running into the side of the grade school building in Hebron, NE. My mom and dad were divorced, but lost him of cancer in September the same year. BUT, getting off subject a little too far. Thanks for the info. DOUG

I was in our local Farm and Home Supply store, they had 2.5 gallon jugs of K1, I think the price said like $30.00 for that jug, I hope it was not the correct price.

Wal mart is selling kerosene at 7.50 a gal jug here,about double the pump price.Expensive heat.

Diesel, heating oil and jet fuel work in most torpedo type heaters. Stinks more though.

If your up my way, there is a place in McHenry county (town of Chemung, west of Harvard) that sells bulk K1.

NO. 2 LOW SULPHER (ROAD DEISEL) IS NEXT BEST TO JET A & IS MUCH EASIER TO GET.

You might check your local airport if they have corporate jets and drain the tanks for water each day. They can't use that fuel in jets again.

Jet A should work, but might get a little spendy if burning alot of it. I think it's currently running over five bucks a gallon at my local airport.

The airport I used to fly out of sold a lot of 100LL to drag racers and antique tractor pullers.

Are there any other airports in the area? Having 24 hr. fuel available is usually a big deal to pilots; somebody around should have it.

Jet A at Macomb IL is 3.85/gallon. Low sulfur diesel is 3.57.9, so not that much difference in price. If I would drive the 35 or 40 miles to Alexandria, MO, wouldn"t be a bit surprised if diesel is closer to 3.00 a gallon, has ALWAYS been that way on the price difference.

Jet A will work fine, i've used it in my GM 6.5 off and on for years. Diesel fuel will also work fine, but usually will smell a little more than Kerosene.

You WON'T "screw up" the heater using #1 or #2 fuel instead of kero, and it certainly doesn't care if it's the new "low sulfur" fuel.

HOWEVER, it will "stink" more with the heavier fuel, and #2 will gell up, unless the heater is in an area that doesn't get REAL COLD.

Ace Hardware stores have (or can get) 1, 1 1/2 and 5 gal containers. Bulk's dying out around here due to the regulations.

Same problem here a couple yrs back...called my State Representative...they checked with state licensing records and found me 3 local sources,who were not advertising.2 were fuel dealers who had K1 on hand for use as solvent in local factory,3rd was small town"Mom&Pop" hardware who sold it bulk from a gravity tank out back for lamps,heaters,other purposes.At that time prepackaged"K1"in jugs was $2.65gal.Bulk in my own cans/jugs was $1.29 from"found" suppliers.

I think jetA is kerosene just.had an argument with somone several years ago and if I rember correctly jetA that dosent measure up to spec is sold as kerosene. do a search online for jetfuel lots of info.

I have a Ready heater that's good for diesel kerosene or jet fuel. With diesel you may have to clean the filter more often. I was told that kerosene is basically a cleaner diesel fuel and jet fuel is just a high grade kerosene. Dave

I use #1 Diesel and it works good. It does not give off any more odor in my opinion.

Jet fuel works great. I would use it instead of kerosine if possible. My son used to work at an airport doing work on fuel trucks etc. He had to flush the tanks every so often and would bring some of the fuel home for me to use in the Knipco. I thought it always seemed to burn hotter and cleaner. He ran it straight in his Izuzu pickup all the time without problems.
