I usually plug my tractor block heater into a timer set to start the heater in the morning and again in the afternoon so it's ready to go if I need to plow out in the am or in after work. I mostly need to plow in after work. What I think would be the berries is a switch I can call with my cell phone from work when I see it's been a snowy blowy day and start the block heater before I leave work. Is such a thing made or legal? I know the Bagdad bombers use cell phones for carnage but I just want to warm my tractor when I need it and not when I don't.

That's how Mr Delacorte turns his fountain on in the East River in NYC. Blows water three hundred feet in the air. Helluva thing to see. Colored lights as well. He enjoys watching it from his penthouse.

Maybe I"ve missed something here but, why not just get a timer that can be set for multiple on and off? I"ve got a couple of them and have in fact used one on my tractor.

Any local electrical supplier should have or be able to get you a inline thermostat you can either hard wire in or plug inline. I bought some inline sealed thermostats from farmtek.com that were made for poultry house fan motors and been using them on the block heaters on several trucks for a while now and they work fine only coming on where you set them to come on and off. We set them to come on below 40 and save some energy that way.

Isn't that the same company that sells security cameras that you can remotely watch your place or check in if the alarm system goes off?

I probably shouldn't tell how to rig this, but howabout a dedicated land line with an old phone that uses a DC bell, disconnect the bell, connect to solenoid to AC outlet, and Viola! Convenience at monthly cost of a land line. You'd have to rig the solenoid to stay on after one ring, though.

I'm assuming you have a phone line available near where you keep the tractor. If so, here's an approx. $150 box that, with an interposing relay, would let you dial up & turn on the heater. If you get a little fancier you can probably find a device that will let you turn the heater on and then it would tell you that the heater is actually on.

Power companies use something like this for remote control of devices at smaller remote substations.

I Googled dial-up controller and found these possibilities. It won't be cheap, but it can be done. Also home security systems and the X10 electrical control systems probably offer something like this. A long, long time ago the electronic hobbyists magazines would occasionally run a project to build a device that would control something remotely using touch tones.

Not sure about the specific application you're after but check with someone in the pivot irrigation industry. I know valley has a contraption that uses a cell phone to control and monitor your pivot.

I know they make such a thing, don't know where to get one or how much though. The application I've heard it used on is being able to start and stop electric center-pivot systems with a phone call...might check with some irrigation suppliers or even your local power company?

Bottom line is: just how much does it cost to plug it in and forget it? No need in spending dollars to save cents. I plug my tractor up when it gets cold and never worry about it....never seen any drastic rise in the electric bill.
