I put a new ballast in and neither light would come on. I then checked all connections and made sure I was getting continuity where the bulb plugs in. Still no light. I just left it and about 1 hour later I went out and it was burning. One has swirles in it and flickers a little. That one is brighter than the other. So I took the new ones out and put the old ones back in and they work perfect. Put the new ones back and same as before, one swirls and flickers and is brighter than the other. I have left it on several hours and it has quit flickering but is still swirls a little and is still brighter than the other. Have I got a problem here? Upon advice from my other post I'm not going to use the old bulbs. even though they work better than the new ones.

I have several newer 48" fixtures that is a smaller diameter bulb and it is 32v if I remember right. Can I use the bulb that is a little larger around and 40 watt in that fixture? It will fit but I haven't tried to light it.

I use multiple 48 lamps rather than 96. The bulbs are easier to buy and transport. I get my bulbs from a lamp company by the case. A case lasts 2-3 years and I am able to buy the 5,000 Kelvin that has a true white color. Oh, and about 1/3 cheaper than the big box stores.

Next time I need a fixture, I may try the T8 size.

To reinforce my statements about grounding below, here is a link to the Advance Transformer ballast trouble shooting brochure.

On page 47 (it starts with page 33) with respect to rapid start lighting it says.....

In order to stay within this range of voltage, it is necessary
to excite the gas within the lamps by means of an external
voltage which is applied to the gas within the lamps to create
ionization. This external excitation is created by means of the
capacity that is present between the lamp and the reflector
or channel. In order to act effectively, the fixture must be connected
to ground and the white lead of the ballast connected
to ground lead of power supply. Thus it is stated on the label
of Rapid Start ballasts MOUNT LAMPS WITHIN 1/2 INCH
(3/4 INCH or 1 INCH) OF GROUNDED METAL REFLECTOR.

No, don't mix T8 and T12 bulbs. If you have fixtures that use the smaller T8 bulbs, don't attempt to use anything else.

Make sure you have a equipment ground wire in the light housing and that is is tightly connected to a bare piece of metal. For some weird reason, a bad equipment ground will keep a flo light from working. I didn't believe it, but read it in a ballast troubleshooting handout I got at Lowes, and I cleaned the grounds on a light that would not work and that fixed it.

40 watters will fit right in the 32 watters. i've done that in my garage for more light.

also, did you know you can buy a whole fixture for the price of a ballast?
