Hi Folks: I have a 1/2 hp Craftsman chain drive opener on my 9x7 overhead garage door. Model #139.536455RT1, Serial #05164DOO606, 120 volts, 5 amp, dated January, 1996. About six weeks ago it failed in that it did not stop ahen the door was open. Instead it ran the "winch" tight against the bolt stopper and grunted a bit, then began flashing the light indicating a problem. I moved the properly adjusted chain back an inch or two and it worked properly for about two days and then did the same thing again. Is this a simple fix, or is it time to buy a new opener?

Thank you,
Glenn F.

I checked things over. All gears and connections look to be fine. I went with Uncle Tom's suggestion and lightly sanded the stopper contacts for up (and down) till shiney. All is well at the moment. We'll see how the next few days go.

Thank you for your responses.

I have had this happen to me. It was the limit contacts that were dirty. There are brass contacts on the end of the limit screws. I scraped my shinney clean with a knife and it worked fine. The new style are made from stainless steel and dont corrode.

Hey there Glenn; About 10 yrs ago I retired after 30 yrs. Installation work ,including about 10-15 THOUSAND garage door openers. If you remove the cover,(usually 2 screws on each end and 2 screws each side),the switches that control up/down limits can be seen.Sometime they pop off the plastic screw, if so ,lube the screw and reset the switch. ALWAYS UNPLUG POWER BEFORE STARTING!!!!Bob
God Bless

Almost sounds as if the worm gear is slipping a bit and then causing it to go to far. The gears are plastic and with time and heat they begin to fall apart. My Dad's did the same thing until it finally wouldn't go up or down any longer. I took the opener down for him and told him if he got the parts I would fix it. He went to Sears and bought the parts for about 30 bucks and he put the gears on himself which isn't a small chore for someone his age and condition. Anyway, he called and asked me to put it back up, I did and after a little adjustment it works just like new again. Certainly cheaper than replacing it.
